Touchscreen.........good idea?

I see some of the new cars and pickups have a touchscreen for different functions. Seems to me that would be a bad idea being distracted scrolling through a screen looking for something instead of just using familiar knobs or buttons.

well thats real stupid. must be a gm idea .. most computors touchscreens are junk after 3 yrs of service or less ,and thats in controlled temp enviroments ,,my vehicle interior is forced to endure a 175 degree temperature swing on the coldest nites and the hottest sunny afternoon , i f cars should last 20 yrs ,,. looks like gonna be a lot of cars without heater , air controls, working radio and engine gauges and speedometer/odometer

I'm gonna look out if somebody's coming down the road at me while they're playing around with it.

Hi, We had a rental Ford Edge this summer for 3 weeks and drove it over 3,000 miles. It was a great vehicle a little hard on gas but most of the controls were soft on a screen mounted in the center of the dash. The manual had to be the worst written manual ever. I am computer literate having worked in the computer industry for over 40 years. Even the radio was selected by the screen. After reading the manual at least twice and playing with the different menus, I figured most of the functions that we were using. My wife could not even figure how to operate the radio. We were stopped in a national park parking lot and another rental Edge pulled in beside us, the driver jump out and asked me if I had figured out how to set and use the speed control. I spent 10 minutes showing her how to select it in the menus and then how to use the buttons on the steering wheel to + or - the speed setting.

Last summer, our local Ford dealer had a pre-launch of the new re-designed 2013 Escape with all the big wigs from For Sales there and they lets do a test drive and then an evaluation afterwards. The new Escape has the same screen interface as the Edge had, so I commented to the Ford Sales people how poorly written the Operators manual for the Operator Console screen was written. They made notes but I don't know if it went anywhere.

I forgot to add the best feature was the backup camera and the audible warning if anything was behind you or approaching from the sides like backing out of a parking space when you are parked between two RVs.
The bad thing was if the sun was shinning at some angles, you could not read the screen for the glare.

GM is trying to sell the idea that touch screens are the way to go. Cheap for GM to build, but a very bad idea IMHO where safe driving needs you to keep your eyes on the road.

As examples, my 91 chevy heater / AC Defrost controls use a display screen to indicate all settings. To adjust anything, I need to take my eyes off the road for a few-15 seconds to check or adjust the heat, defrost or AC.

My 2000 Dodge Dakota has 3 mechanical control knobs for all heat defrost and AC functions.
I can check and adjust all settings by feel of the knob positions, without taking my eyes off the road.

We are looking to get a newer vehicle for my wife to drive. We have been looking and there seems to be an industry wide movement to touch screens.

My wife absolutely hates a touch screen controlled anything. You should see the salesman's faces when she opens the door of a car and see a touch screen. She will just slam the door and call it a piece of junk an move on. LOL

The one fellow looked like he was just about going to cry when she found out all the cars she was interested in had touch screens.

My wife is going to buy this herself. She has "her" money from her first marriage. They did very well for themselves. HE just could not make it past a major heart attack. Nice fellow. So she can buy just about any car she wants. She is not on a shoe string budget. All the new ones she has looked at have a touch screen in them. So we are going for a 3-4 year old car with low miles.

Try finding a cell phone without a "JUNKY" touch screen.

So then they keep trying to pass laws that say you can not text and rive or be on a cell phone and drive so now they what to add touchscreens to cars so you can get another law passed or try to so you can not use your touch screen and drive. Or maybe they will do the screens like in some of the new jet fighters etc. Yep the more computer stuff they add to cars the more it will cost to keep one rolling down the road

AMEN AMEN I SAY UNTO YOU ,, WHY CANT THE CAR CO USE WISDOM,, who the hale wants to be phukin around with a confusin touchscreen going 70 mph.if allsystems were made exactly the same, like GOD made the animal anatomy it would not be too hard ,but the dam junc wont last and will cost a bank bailout to keep the thing functional to get the available miles out of the vehicle .i have been saying for yrs that DORF hired all the laidoff-flunkies from gmotorsjunc to build the EDGEand tortoisTAURUS ...

This has been discussed before, and I know many things on newer cars are mandated by law, but I'd still like to see each car-maker build one medium size car (so families could use it, too) with minimum "tech": simple push-button radio, old-fashioned manual control heater, wind-up windows, manual seats, etc. As simple an engine as the guvment will allow. Should come in quite a bit cheaper.

Maybe it can't be done, maybe no one would buy it. But I'm getting a little sick of "high tech", and I'd like to have a chance to go the low tech route for a change. Main problem I'm having is with the heating/cooling systems on "climate controlled" cars- eventually, the little doors that are opened automatically by vacuum quit opening (or closing), and you end up paying somebody 400 bucks to fix them. I'm perfectly capable of adjusting the air flow and temperature with an old fashioned slide bar control, and the fan with a 3 position switch.

Same thing with a common sense work truck. Just give me a regular cab 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive with a manual transmission,no chrome trim, cloth or vinyl bench seat, rubber floor mats that I can pull out and wash the manure off of,simple AM/FM radio, knobs to control things. In other words, like my 85.

They are going for the CHEAP and knobs cost money to build and install. Why not voice activate it all.

I like the idea of standardizing all the layouts, like the poster said with the animal anatomy. Sure the anatomy of similar species are similar but I know I do appreciate the specifics of certain female anatomies. Thank heaven the human is not built like the bovine.

Any body remember the manually opened hood vent. Sat right in middle in front of the widshield. On a cool sunny day, you could get all the cool air you wanted out on the open road. Now days, you cook or turn on the air cond. Vent-0-panes in door window, also lots of fresh air. Progress.

I see where one auto maker has a prototype that recognizes hand gestures. I can imagine the jokes over that one,but it's the truth.

Yep,I remember. I think that went away about the same time as having the brake master cylinder under the floor board.

The boys truck has that vent. If he can ever save up the $$ to finish the engine for it we hope to put it back on the road. 1951 Chev pick up and when done will have a 292 straight 6 in it but no where near a stock engine

Yep, from what I'm hearing, I guess I'm gonna have to keep my '99 Ford diesel for the duration- because they're not putting manual transmissions in them any more! I've got a 6 speed (granny on the bottom, overdrive on the top), and I'm not parting with it!

Touch screen doesn't work for g p s while car is in drive on my dodge pickup or the wife's Chrysler van. You have to stop, put in park to search g p s

Great grand pa said "don't need no top and winders, park it if it rains". Grand-pa said" don't need no heater or radio, pay attention to your driveing". Dad said "air conditioning, that's crazy roll the winders down, automatic transmission, I can change gears!". Old people don't change do they.

It's probably a cost saver. One touch screen can ellimanate six or ten switches and knobs and a lot of wiring. Hopefully they don't cost too much to replace in a few years.

I remember them, plus the side vents on the Chevy pickups. Also remember the 2X4 holding the gear shift lever in place on the hay truck. No one wanted to ride in the middle.

They have their place. Pretty difficult to make a usable nav system without a touch screen. How the heck would you spell out an address? But there's little need for touch screens without a nav system. As far as I know, GM only uses touch screen on vehicles with nav systems. Can't say about the other manufacturers.
