Confusing hobby farm

I ran across this ad, hobby farm help wanted....

I find it funny. Did someone get in over their head, and not realize critters are actually work? Why have the farm or the hobby if you are going to hire these tasks 6 days a week!

Paul

Looking for help our hobby farm - $10 (Trimont)
We are looking for someone to help with chores on our hobby farm 3-6 times per week.
Some of the things would include cleaning horse stalls, feeding and watering horses and all animals, cleaning out goat pen, rabbit cage, parrot cage, and chicken coop.
Filling outdoor water tanks, power washing in barn, general cleaning in barn, cleaning out cat litter boxes and food and water dishes.... Sweeping and disinfecting animal areas and buckets, walking foster dogs when we have them, and other misc. projects

Schedule can be flexible...
Must love animals, have good communication skills, and be dependable.

Nothing confusing about that. Pretty clear they want to be farmers but don't want any of the work. I believe the original way of doing that was abolished in the 1860s

LOL...that sums it up...but hey if they have the cash....power to them. Maybe some high school kid can make some good cash. But I'm thinking that they wouldn't be a very good employer if they are that unwilling to get their hands dirty.

It's been my experience that "good communication skills" means shut and listen to what I want and do it perfectly my way! Paul when do you start? Sounds like a good part time job!

That sounds like a 7 days a week job with long hours. We did that years ago when we had milking cows, a barn full of young stock along with pregnant cows that were due to calve plus a horse barn. It wasn't a hobby it was a living. Hal

10 bucks an hour, under the table, sounds pretty good, when you consider it's going to amount to about 50 hours a week. I wonder how long they'll be able to afford the help, unless they're making so much money at their city jobs that it's no object. Probably two of them working, each driving Beemers, making over 100k each.

sounds like city folks made some money, then moved to the country because its the thing to be seen doing, then found out us country people dont sit around and do nothing like city folks do,there is no such a thing as a farm, either hobby or production, that has nothing that needs doing, now they need somebody to do all the work, the work is getting in the way of their teeth bleaching, hair fixing, and shopping trips lol how to you recognize a real country gal? when you meet her, she has on muck boots up to her knees, her hair is a mess, and tied up, and she has on a mans flannel shirt, and work gloves up to her forearms , and she wants to know what your doing on her place, her truck is a flatbed, hasnt been washed since new, and has a front bumper that would support a tank, at least out here, a city gal in the country; every hair in place, drives a clean suv, wears the latest style on tv, teeth whiter than a neon light and clean hands

Newfarmer, I was just thinking the same thing. They want a zoo but they don't have the time or will to care for it. Jim

Lots of quick harsh judgements being made here....

Until I know more I prefer to look at some possible good here. The quote "...foster dogs when we have them..." tends to lead me to believe that we might be dealing with someone with a very good and warm heart.

Since I have seen very few of the city...iots with what I call a warm heart: I am thinking it is someone who rescues animals and needs some manpower help. Or alternatively it could be an elderly person who simply needs some help due to their age. Since I hope to stay on my hobby farm until I die then I may too have to hire some part time help in my advanced years. Being around things you enjoy even if you are no longer physically able to do them is still therapeutic and can make you still feel alive. Better than sitting in a rest home waiting for Jeopardy, Wheel a Fortune, or Bingo to come on the TV....

Regardless, this person does at least recognize they need some help and are willing to pay someone a rather fair cash wage to get it. Even if they are indeed a BMW'er city...iot at least they are not going to let the animals suffer neglect. So whoever they are they are not all bad...

$10 an hour? My 99 weeks of unemployment just ran out, but goodness, that is much less than our disability, food stamps, ADC, home heating allowance, susidized rent, free cel phone,Medicaid, and IRS earned income credit. We gets $3000 a month from the gubmint and don't have to get all dirty. No thanks. We don't need no stinking shovels.

Could be someone that has health problems like me that does not want to give up their animals. Or it could even be someone that needs to travel to shows.
I know of a Doctor and his wife that raises show horses that has barn help when they can not be there at chore time for what ever reason. They do their own chores when they can.

Not an uncommon request.

Sounds like it's a part time thing. I've hired relatives to look after our animals when we go on vacation. At least they are taking care of the animals. Be a good job for a HS kid.

it says 3-6 times a week, not 3-6 days.
Sure a lot of quick judgments on here, nothing like not knowing the facts before bashing someone.....

Could be someones job changed, or maybe required someone to travel more than originally. Or even better, things are picking up and there is more overtime than before.
Maybe someone got sick.

Could also be someone that had a stroke, cancer, heart attack or a sick spouse that requires extreme care. Just sayin...

Or have a place that the public visits. Some hobby farms raise produce to sell in their own market and have farm animals as a draw.

Well I hope none of you on here never get older or have poor health. Many seem to be beating up on some one willing to pay someone to WORK!!!!! They are not asking for a FREE HAND out. They are willing to PAY someone to WORK!!!

WOW what a terrible idea!!!! Actually paying someone for their WORK!!! We can't have that type of thing in this country!!! We have to give out all your money for ZERO return.

THEN READ the AD!!! It says 3-6 times each week. That is NOT 6 days a week like some are stating here.

There are many reasons they may need some part time help. MAYBE they are older and need someone part time so they can keep their animals.

Maybe they them selves got a job that requires them to work long hours 3-6 days each week. So they need help on the days they have to work??? I know some guys that have been shifted to 12 hour days. So you take a 12 hour shift and some drive time and sleep there is not any time left.

There are hundreds of possible reasons for them to want to hire some help. The thing that really surprises me is that many are criticizing them for wanting to HIRE someone. I guess your boss is a guilty of all the faults you are laying on these people because he is hiring YOU!!!!

Around me there are just about ZERO jobs for young kids anymore. My Grand daughters would kill for a chance to work with animals and get paid for it. They have to PAY for the upkeep on their horses. They are having a tough time finding anything that will pay them money. They spent all day yesterday walking and picking up cans and bottles in the road ditches to turn them in for the deposit. Do any of you think they made $10 an hour.

End of my rant!!!

actually my boys would love to have a neighbor like this. a little extra cash and get to do what they like doing it.

Not to take sides on this, but I once had a job that was 36 hours per week. So I worked 3 days a week and had 4 off. Suddenly, this same job demanded that I was work 15 hours per day, every day of the week. After awhile, it settled back down. Maybe the owner of these animals now works where I used to work.

I had a weekend job like that when I was in high school. Older couple, raised registered Herefords and didn't want to quit yet, but just could no longer get everything done and keep everything up like they wanted to. I did everything from mow grass, shovel manure (lot of that), rake leaves, paint, take loads to the dump, you name it. They paid good, fed me lunch, I never complained about any task, and we were both happy for the arrangement.

One sidelight- wherever I was working on fall weekends, he had a radio set up and tuned to the Washington State University Cougar's football game. Even had the pickup radio tuned to that station when I used it. He was a great Cougar fan, and was trying to get me ginned up to go to school there. As a matter of fact, I was an ag guy all the way, and had never considered any other school. I didn't even apply anywere else when the time came. Go Cougs!

I second those who opined that there's nothing wrong with hiring someone to do what you can't (or don't want) to do. That's pretty much what this country was founded on. I think there still are some kids out there who would love to have a job like that.

I know nothing about GordoSD so I took it at face value. From seeing the two posts it sure did go over my head. Chuck it up, It is my turn in the barrel. :)^D

However being an employer since 1976 I have seen just those types of scenarios. One year I had a high employment of 21 and made out 147 W2's for that same reason. The welfare reform act helped that. With that blown out of the water it is back.

Kinda where I was seeing it. None of these items appear to be money making in any way.

So, one is being asked to come in and take care of lots of individual pets. _That_ can be a difficult thing, with some people... Pets are viewed as more worthy than people by some folk, and that situation doesn't go well for lowly employees.....

Actually a 3-6 times a week job would be far worse than a 3-6 days a week job, as you will be working an hour or 3, then go away; come back again later for another hour. Whole day is spent dressing, driving, travel expense, and they only want to pay you for 2-3 hours of work, a person goes in the hole on such a deal unless you live next door.

Hey, it's a good honest job, I'm all for it, but I see so many red flags on it, I'd be scared of how that all panned out for the employee.....

Certainly a lot of situations with a temp job or health issue to create a very good job oppertunity for someone for a while, but - the other options and thoughts come to mind a little quicker for me.

End of my rant!!!

Agree 100%. I was reading the thread thinking the same thing. All of my 3 girls worked on a horse farm growing up, mucking stalls, feeding animals, stacking hay, etc. Helped to instill a good work ethic in them. I'm one of those people spoken about earlier in the thread: grew up and lived in the suburbs, nearing retirement, bought a place in the country, plan to keep horses and maybe a few other animals. Wife wondered about all the work this would be when we're in our 70's and I told her we'd just get some help, it'd be a win-win situation , hiring someone (probably a teenager) who could use some money and learn what it is to work hard and allowing us to work as hard as we wanted (or are able to) in our "golden" years.

The self-righteous attitude in some of the comments is typical of comments I hear from some of my "country" neighbors, disparaging "college-educated" yuppies, doctors, lawyers, etc., etc. moving out to "their" country. I just zip my lip when they're ranting, figuring every one is entitled to their opinion.

I DID mention to one guy after a lawyer rant that 2 of my daughters were attorneys in Washington DC and worked very hard for the very good money they make, not to mention each has a couple hundred thousand in student loans to pay off. He got kind of quiet and changed the subject.

(quoted from post at 10:27:40 01/27/13) Someone most definitely needs to invent a sarcasm font.

There's no sarcasm in the early posts. It's all genuine disdain for people who, exactly as JD Seller said, are looking to PAY someone for WORK.

If you want to rip on people, rip on the ones that post sob stories on craigslist looking for cheap hay or cheap boarding for their horsies because they're in over their head and they're looking for a handout.

Lots of rich folks in my area have hobby farms and some aren't little and they hire most of the work done.I used to bush hog for an outfit like that they paid me $20/hr to use THEIR tractor, bush hog and fuel.It had a heated, air conditioned cab so I'd go over and bush hog on drizzley days.Plus the lady that owned the place gave me over 400 bales of some of the best hay you ever saw because she thought it was a 'liitle
dusty' for her horses.

Yea sounds to me like they may be doing some animal rescue stuff and could have gotten in a little too deep to keep up with it themselves.

I understand exactly what they are looking for....My wife and I both have full time jobs. There are many times that I wish we could find someone willing to help out sometimes.
