8N with no serial number

Just bought a late 8N with no serial number behind oil filter on block. Just a smooth flat, raised blank area where the numbers should be. It is in fair shape and I am having a lot of fun working on improving it to a good looking work tractor. How will I be able to get an engine rebuild kit if these are missing? An experienced 8N guy said may be a replacment engine. Thanks

Hi Yogi,
How are things in Jellystone?
The guy told you right. It was probably a replacement engine from somewhere along the way.
But it doesn't matter.
All the 9N, 2N and 8N tractors - from 1939 to 1948 will use the same internal parts. So if you tell your parts man or machinest it's an N you'll be good to go.

Very likely to be a replacement engine that should have been stamped with the numbers of the old one but many did not get that done. One way to get you in the ball park is if it is a front mount distributor it is a 1948 to early 1950. If side mount it is a as in April/May 1950 to 1952. Or you could also have a mutt made from 2 or more dead tractors. I have a friend who had a 9N/8N mutt. 9N front axle and rear end but had a 1951 8N engine in it

Boo Boo kept me up all night snoring. And that pesky Mr. Ranger Sir kept poking around all day yesterday while I tinkered with my old 8N. It's a front mounted distributor with 8N forged on the rear. external_link has a bunch of different kits, I just gotta figure out which one. Thanks for the help.

Even if it had numbers you will have to go into it to figger what you will need... The only N engines I have ran into that never were stamped were industrial engines (its a term that could mean it was produced for other applications such as a stationary generator are a power plant engine for what ever they could dream up to use that engine for even a replacement engine for a tractor)... The only one that I have opened up (was used on a N) did not have sleeves are harden valve seats ,,, All that means is over time it may have had sleeves and harden seats installed at some point in its lifetime,,, make sure it has sleeves are harden seats before you make a attempt to remove them...
