I needed a 6 volt battery for my TO 20 I am going to sell (my first wheel tractor, when I started mowing) The 12 year battery didn't take a charge, as some of you mentioned. Thought I would find a cheep one at Pep Boys. To my surprise they wanted 94.00 for a small 6 volt. What caused the high battery prices? stan
 
Allowing Johnson Controls and Exide to control the market is the biggest part of it . They set the prices for 80-90% of the market.......
 
Ask what they want or charge for your core battery. Last time I exchanged a battery they charged me $25 for my old one till I brought it in. They want to make sure hazardous waste is getting disposed of properly.
 
The prices of batteries are crazy. A small battery for a four wheeler can run from $75 - $100.

Now think about buying a set of tires.

Auction prices for used tractors has to come down as it costs too much to keep them up.
 
I bought a 6V battery for a vintage Ford tractor about 10 days ago for 51.** exchange.

Prices of 6V batteries are considerably higher at auto parts stores than at farm stores.

Yea the prices are up , BUT every once in a while you can find real deals . This past summer i got a Steal not a deal a Steal on a D8 battery brand new from the local auot parts store for 40 bucks as they needed to get it out of there as it was a year old . I have a place for that battery IF it will fit as it is just a little bigger then what was in a D X 90 Deutz amd IF i can shoehorn it in i save my friend over 200 bucks .
 

I have bought two batteries from TSC this fall. A 6V for the mighty 8N for around $64 and a 12V group 31 for the 4000 for $84 (on sale). Yes - they are expensive
 
i would guess, it's supply and demand,,since 6v aren't as popular as 12v, it takes longer to make a 6v, refitting molds for 6v compaired to 12v, plates, plastic molds, labor , stocking etc..my $.02 opnion/guess
