New behavior for my tractor

I've owned this same tractor for over 2 years. This is the first time I've noticed this behavior and wanted to ask you guys about it. It sat for about 2 months and I fueled it and cranked it last Saturday (needed to do some bush hogging now that that leaves are off the briars and I can see where I'm going)... Under a load, I get a whole lot of black smoke out of the exhaust. Engine seems to be operating the same - sounds the same and acts the same. The only difference is lots of 'extra' black smoke... It is a MF35 Deluxe w/Perkins 3cyl diesel... All fluid levels are good - no oil in the anti-freeze and no anti-freeze in the oil, etc... I'm thinking that it's running too rich under a load and the black smoke is from un-burnt fuel... Ambient temperature was mid 70's...

Critters may have set up housekeeping in your air cleaner. Another posibility would be the muffler is rusty and flaked off restricting the exaust flow.

Black smoke is a sign of too rich of a fuel flow. The black smoke is unburnt fuel. Almost sounds like pump problems. The pump may be sticking.

simplest thing first check the intake i've had dirt daubbers build up in the intake when a tractor sets for a little

Check air intake, and if its an inline pump, consider adding some
kerosene, and 2-stroke mix, to free up the pump. Also check the
fuel return line from the pump, to the tank, for a blockage.

Almost bet your intake AIR FILTER is clogged. At least that is the first place you need to start looking.

Well I got a weird one for you too. Dads little diesel lawn mower was smoking black and lacked power. I said air filter ! Well tried that and no change. Turned out to be the fuel filter ! I'm still baffled how a fuel restriction made it over fueled ?

My pullin tractor does that for 300 feet or more and then quits. I am just being smart arzz. Is the load causing it to smoke? Does it do this at high rpms with no load?

are you sure you put diesel fuel in it NO OFENCE meant but had one in the shop that the guy put gas in smoked like H but ran frailly good

It"s not getting enough air. Probably need to clean the oil bath air
cleaner. One time I cleaned mine and still got black smoke. Then
found I had used 40 wt oil which was too heavy. When I put 30 wt in
it solved the smoking under load.

One thing those who mentioned check the air cleaner they did't mention the whole intake system. Mice may have built a nest in one of the air tubes.

From all the replies, looks like I'll be checking the air filter (not getting enough air would cause an running rich condition too). If that is not it, then I'll be adding some seafoam (keep a couple bottles on hand just for such emergencies as well as some 2-stroke oil). I'm certain that I put diesel in the diesel tractor. No, it doesn't have a choke.
If all that doesn't clear up the situation, I'll have a go at the exhaust (although I hardly think it is clogged since it produces so much black smoke!)... The only other possibility (that I can think of) is the fuel delivery... Thanks for all the replies (and for some of the chuckles too)...

P.S. I [b:5de681059f][i:5de681059f][u:5de681059f]HATE[/u:5de681059f][/i:5de681059f][/b:5de681059f] it when my tractor isn't working correctly!

They run rough when fuel filter is plugged or a lack of fuel. So that means that sometimes air fuel mix is too lean to burn so that becomes smoke because of incomplete combustion. I have even had a lift pump fail on a diesel and at full throttle it would backfire out the exhaust and shoot a flame.

Hmmm... But if it were running too lean to burn the fuel, wouldn't I lose a bunch of horse-power too? It still pulls and works just fine, it just blows lots of black smoke when the bush-hog bottoms out on a dirt mound or hits a bunch of extra thick weeds... And it still runs smooth as glass...

My best guess on your tractor is the air filter or piping plugged. If it is lean it would most likely run rough at a high speed and not have the power it should. If you were to have added gas instead of diesel it would smoke white and be hard to start because gas is not designed to fire from compression. You should be able to smell gas in the tank.

And the answer is: Intake pipe clogged with a couple of big oak leaves... And various, sundry other debris...

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions...
