Favorite motorcycle from your youth?

A post below reminded me of my motorcycle from my teen years. It was a 1970's? Honda CT 70 trail with gold paint. 3 speed with auto clutch. On a good day it would go 40 mph downhill with a tailwind. 35mph was usual. It may have been small but it sure was fun. To keep this farm related, it did earn it's keep by bringing in the milk cows and being dropped off and hid at the end of far from home fields so I could could ride it home and leave the tractor in the field.

Does an allstate scooter count? Thats me at around 12.

I had several dirt bikes when I was a kid but the favorite of my youth was when I was 18 and bought a brand new 1981 Yamaha SR 500. Single cylinder and kick start only. I loved that bike. That is probably why I still have it :). I still ride it every summer. Average about 2300 miles a year now (and 1 rear tire). That bike still kicks back like a mule if YOU don't kick it hard enough.

My Mother wouldn't let me have a motor...what have you. For my 16th birthday I begged for a Cushman Eagle and it never happened.

I was 35 before I had a bike and at 36 I quit the sport for safety reasons which are personal.

I use a boat for my bike today; lots safer.

I started out with a Sears three and a half horse mini bike. Had a Honda 90,then a 160. Can't say any of them were my favorite. What I really liked was my older brother's Yamaha 250 dirt bike, but he wanted more for it than I wanted to pay.

My younger brother had a Chaparral like the one that the Pawn Stars bought and said was so valuable. Don't know who he ever sold it to.

Started with a 68 BSA Mark 4 Spitfire, then got a 67 XLCH,then got the 70 Yamaha DT1 dirt bike. Never got used to shifting with left foot. Still got all three, BSA is in need of help, the XLCH starts and runs so does the DT. Tried chasing cows with the BSA, only once, the DT was better

Started on a used '53 barrel spring Cushman Eagle, rode it for 2 years, got rid of it in lieu of this Triumph 650 TR6. Always missed the Cushman, just got another one recently-- and still ride a 1100 cc. cycle.

Always have liked the old umphs had a pair of tiger 200s both 1959 models hard thing was going from a Honda to the umphs due to brake and shifter being on opposite sides

The bike I liked the best was a 1967 BMW R-60/S. Then it would be the stunt bikes I had. One was a Yamaha RD350 which was a fast light bike for doing trick on and the other was a Yamaha 500 with the 4 valve per cylinder which was not stock and was very fast as a race bike

My last and favorite motorcycle was a 1975 Moto Guzzi 850 T3 purchased new for $2400. Sold it to buy my first house.

Cut my teeth on a little 4-stroke honda xl-70 and got a suzuki TS 185 in high school. I flat wore that thing out.

Had 4 or 5 dirt bikes. Favorite was a honda 90. Had a lot of fun on that little bike. Would do about 45. Later had a suki 250. Pounded that one to death. Or maybe it pounded me? Bout 1980 I graduated to a road bike. 72 suki 750 water buffalo. Crashed on the way home from the dealer. That was the end of the bikes. Every few years I get it in my head I want another one. So far I have beat the erge back. Who knows? I"m 54, there"s still time.:~)

Had a 71 Yamaha 175. Ran it nearly to death. Got my first car and traded the bike even up for a set of aluminum slot rims and bald tires! What a moron! The bike was worth about $300 and the rims about $150! Boy was I stupid. Had a 74 Suzuki TC 100 it was okay but not the best. My dad has our first bike still. A Suzuki T125R twin. Can you imagine how big or small the pistons must be in a 125 twin? The worst was a Harley Sprint 350. I wanted a big 4 stroke. This was not the answer. What a pile of wrthless Sh!t! My older brother had a Sears 106, cost 199.95 new!

First was a '71 Honda Trail 90 that Dad bought brand new when I graduated 8th grade. Put 16,000 miles on it running the back roads of SD, never was titled. Moved on to a CB400F in college, owned over 30 in the next 20 years. Now have some Honda 4 wheelers, Suxuki DR350ES enduro and a Honda Goldwing that hasn't been out of the garage in 4 years.....

the best bike I ever had was a 1969 Honda cl 350,a good dependable handy bike, then I bought a 1975 Kawasaki 500 ,way too fast for the size of it,I was lucky I didnt get hurt showing off with it ,It was fast, but handled crappy, and was not good on long rides.

My first bike was a 1968 Suzuki TC120, the image is a 250. It had a dual sprocket on the rear, with two master links in the chain. You could switch it to the smaller sprocket for "road". I left it on enduro. It saved many of miles walking through the fields to my cousins.

My favorite was my 1985 CR500 with a big bore kit. Very tempermental bike, but when it ran right, hang on. I bought quite a few handlebars for that bike.

1979 Kawasaki MKII, 1000cc four cylinder. Bought it brand new and rode it over 100,000 miles. No engine or clutch work. Only repairs were maintenance items, cables, battery, chain/sprockets, tires etc. It sits in my garage with the odometer showing 99,999.9 which is when I pulled over to the side of the road and unhooked the drive cable.

Honda 150 twin first "road" bike that was highway legal by 4cc. Old BMW R50/2 rescued from Chicago police pound after it had been hit by fleeing from police stolen car- take it to club garage, root through the odd parts shelf and back on road in a week with R51 front end, harley fender, peanut tank, etc, fix up more stock parts over the next year and run it 5 years until speed limit raised from 55mph. Suzi T500 Titan twin was after the first little Honda- got some speeding tickets with it. Old goldwing for current road use now- can use unleaded gas, engine is like 2 R50s in a water jacket, can do legal limit+ and doesn"t attract nuisances like the Harley"s or the BSA chopper. RN

JDB, my foavorite was this 1975 Can-AM MX250 that thought it was a 500. I just sold it lasat year, chuck

1966 Honda 305 super hawk as long as you carried a spare switch with you. Rode it from Iowa to California during the Summer of Love.

I've only had two bikes, neither of which is deserving of the name 'motorcycle'. Both were bought new in 1956/1957.

The first was a Simplex Servi-Cycle, which was essentially a very beefed-up bicycle. It was a very well-made machine, but the 125 cc engine wouldn't pull your hat off your head. No gears--a centrifugal clutch powered a belt that ran in a channel around the rear wheel rim. It blew a head gasket shortly after I got it, so I traded up for a Harley Hummer 125, also a 1956/1957 model.

The Hummer was a nice little bike, but also underpowered. Two-cycle, three-speed. Fifty down a steep hill. Even so, it would go anywhere, and it allowed me to get away from our remote rural farm and have some social life.

I would love to have them both back, especially the Servi-Cycle. My sister-in-law rides around on my place on her Honda Z 50, about a 1970 model.

I bought a Suzuki X-6 Hustler shortly they became available in 1966. In its day, it was a screamer.

There are so many...

Top 3 in no particular order would be:

Yamaha RT360 Enduro. Rode that thing all over Northern Japan while stationed at Misawa. Comfy and powerful enough for middlin' long road trips, nimble enough for off road playing.

Honda XL500. Rode that one all over the Panhandle of Florida while stationed in Pensacola. Same deal - roadworthy but still decent for off-road.

Yamaha XS650. Absolutely without question my favorite road bike. Bought a new one in 1974, rode it for 8 years in 3 states and one foreign country (Japan again).

A year ago this past October I finally found another one after 3 years of looking. Got a '79, overhauled it last winter and rode the heck out of it this past summer. Doing a little fine tuning this winter and looking forward to another summer of fun with it.

To the feller with the Kawasaki 500 Triple: I know what you mean. Friend of mine had one, we swapped bikes for a day. I've ridden a couple of fast bikes, but that thing scared the willies out of me.

I have owned 39 motorcycles. I currently have a 1500 Goldwing and a 250 Rebel. I have ridden a motorcycle to ever state, more than once in the union except Hawaii. I raced off road for eighteen years and finally got tired off getting my body busted up and wised up when I hit forty. I'm am paying the price now in my sixties. In the last year I rode from Mi. to Fl. and back in the spring with my wife on the back. Then with my wife in the summer rode from Mi. to San Diego to Vancover and back to Mi.
My favorite bike would be the 1969 CB Honda that I rode in 1969-1970 to every corner of the US. Including Mi to Ca. to Wa. to Maine to Fl. then back to Mi. I have never owned a Harley either but may get one someday just so I can say I have.

First one was a CB 160 Honda dream was just as nice as my last one.I was second owner of this 78 CB 750 Hondamatic. 7,200 actual miles.

I live in an area where a lot of coal trucks travel...Not enjoyable when you have to run 65 MPH on A 45 MPH zone just to keep from them making you dead . not to mention other folks that pay no mind to bike riders .. I sold it a Year ago. (too cheap)
a97306.jpg

I'm not gonna say they were my favorites, but the only motorcycles that I ever owned were Allstates, sold by Sears. 250cc with a unique twin cylinder and only one combustion chamber. They were too heavy for the displacement and the cast iron jug would overheat and gall the pistons. Run about 60/70 mph with a good tailwind.
redtom, I have a Sears 106cc, its in several boxes but I think I could still find it all. Been in an old building for 35 yrs.
And Larry, those scooters were made by Vespa, good little scooters, but with the small diameter wheels you had to really watch for potholes. (Which I am sure you know all about.) They were a real PITA to work on with the engine, trans, and final drive all in one unit. I worked on Sears motorcycles from '65 until they discontinued sales.

We used to watch three races in Illinois ( Springfield, Peoria, and
Du Quoin ) and the one at Louisville. I liked watching at
Louisville the best. Back then the big names were Springsteen,
Shobert, Graham, Parker, Carr, .......

We were rooting for the Harleys, mostly Scotty Parker.

Nothing can compare to the thrill of the sound of that "rolling
thunder".

I had two of those 185 Suzukis , a 1971 and a 1972. Bullet proof bikes. Also a TS 250 Suzuki and TM 400 Suzuki (frightening) and YZ 400 Yamaha and KD 200 Kaw. Never rode street , like my head in one piece too much.

'71 Honda CT-90, early on I wasn't quite big enough to hold it up from a seated position, I would kinda take off and jump on the seat at the same time. Also got an ATC-90 the second year they were out, crashed hard after only two weeks, bent the bars and the top of the tank down, broke one side of the fender off. Stayed that way through years of unspeakable motor vehicle horrors until it passed away in the early '80's. What a product!

First one was a 1968 Honda 90 street bike. Would do app. 58 according to the speedo. Took a while to get up to it. At 16 I got a 1969 Yamaha R3 350 street bike. That would top out right at 100. Took a little bit to get to that, had to lay down flat over the handle bars, but according to the speedo it made it. Not too smart, but seemed like a good idea at the time.

I remember giving my friend a ride in the schoolyard, bunch of kids where in the ballfield,we came barrelling through the field ,I hit the soft dirt ,slid sideways for a long ways, and by some miracle it stood back up just when we got near the gang of kids,They all said wow ,that was cool!! I had no control over any of it,but never let them know it!

Too many to remember. Rare one was James motorcycle. Only had it for 5 miles. Most fun at the time was Allstate MoPed for motor pedal. Go either way motor or pedal. 2 speed. 150mpg. Do wheelies any time. Lots of Honda 350's. Whoops! first was Honda 250 CL maybe. Never seen another. Moto Guzzi 850 El Dorado in 73. 110 mph. Maybe more, never tried, too scared. At 69 I ride Yamaha tw200 perfect for old man 100 mpg. Bought new in 2006. Same battery. On and off road. Cost 2499 new. Also couple never got out of the basket they came in. Almost good as tractors. Harley 1200 anniversary model, was it 95 or 98. Love em all. If you can love a machine. Like others couldnot ride until left home. Dad said I would break my neck. Probably right. Dave

The first one I had was a TY80 Yamaha. It was always fouling plugs. The one I got at the age of 12 was a 76 KE100 Kawasaki. I rode that thing everywhere and was a very dependable bike. Also had a 3cyl. 400 Kawasaki, a 350 Yamaha, a 750 Shadow, a 700 Virago and currently have a 93 1100 Virago.I have also had a few 200x and a 350x 3-wheeler and now have a 500 Polaris Predator. The boy has a Honda 400ex and a Yamaha Banshee.

I wish I had never sold my XT-500, the SR-500 looks like it should be a nice bike, never got the chance to ride one.

First one was a Honda CT 70 like yours. Tougher'n nails, bar none. You couldn't destroy that thing. I could run flat out for miles (35 mph) and it'd take it. Exhaust pipe would be cherry red. Went through a small stream with it once and I didn't realize the channel was as deep as it was. When I hit the channel the water was up to the bottom of the seat but the little 70 kept burbling along and it got me out. I had my feet in the air to keep them dry. Then there was a progression of Honda 175's 250's and 350's, all used and cheap when I bought them. The one motorcycle I wish I would have kept was the Triumph Trophy 500. It made my butt itch from the vibes and parts fell off but it had a nice sound and was a dream to handle with it's low center of gravity. Oh yes, it had Lucas electrics. Prince of Darkness!! Jim

About 1964, cuz I see the old mans" new 64 Ford there behind me and my pals and my Honda 50 C110.
I"m about 15 there, on the right.

mine was a 1947 Indian Scout. Tank shift , suicide clutch, and an oil sump pump that didn't pickup very well!

I have had many bikes over the years, but my favorite was my first. 1974 Z50 Honda. It was blue. That little bike is still here, it went through me, 2 younger sisters, and my 4 boys. Overhauled once. Many tires, chains and sprockets, but I would think if the world came to an end, I would strap 5 gal of gas to it and make a break for the coast.

I had a 1970 Honda 350. Those Kawi triples were called widow makers. I rode a friend's one afternoon and took my girlfriend for a ride on it. I told her to hang onto me and she said she didn't need to, she had been on motorcycles plenty. Pretty quick she was holding on for dear life.. I also had a 340 Rokon that I campaigned all over New England for two seasons of enduros I kind of lusted after a 250 Penton. I also had a 250 Ossa somewhere in there. for a street bike I would like to have had a Norton 810 Commando.

Well I had a Suzuki Trailhopper, a Honda SL100, Yamaha YZ250 and a Honda CB750. Wish that I still had them all but have none. Remember the Hodaka's Maico's and Carrabella's? How about the Bultaco's, Penton's DKW's and Montesa? Oh the memories. I had a real love of any two stroke two wheeled bike.

I bought a new 68 yamaha 250 DT1 when I got out of the Navy in 68. This is a picture of my 68 Yamaha DT1 I have now. I ride in the dirt. I have one for street riding also. This was a couple years ago. The Yamaha is one of my favorits, of my youth. But my all time favorites are my indians. Not from my youth though.
That's me all right. Stan

My first was a well used '69 trail 90.Rode the wheels off it.When I was 16,I bought a brand new '73 (leftover) Honda CL175.It was (metalic)candy apple green with white 'flames',and LOTS of chrome. It was beautiful!I put 30,000 miles on it in 3 years, rode it all through high school and after.I loved it,It was/is still my favorite motorcycle of all time.Brke my heart when I had to sell it.I still miss it.

The first one I rode was a 55 Suzuki Trail & Street combo. But I rode some Harleys back in the late 60s but I think the second on my old favorites was a Norton. I didn't own it a friend of mine did & he used to let me ride it all the time. It had plenty power & was just a real smooth bike to ride. But the most favorite is the HARLEY that I & the wife rode from Iowa to Alaska when I retired. We were on the road for 2 1/2 months & rode over 17,000 miles. I have a lot of good old memories on that bike & it will have a place in my garage as long as I'm alive. Gerald

Depends on how you define favorite. My '52 Norton ES2 was the worst of all worlds, fairly quick, but you better wrench on it all week if you want to ride on Sunday. Still had a lot of fun with it, and wish I had it back. Lucas electrics were only seemed better when compared to Lucas brakes.

1976 Honda XR75, $649.00 brand new. My sister got a new Z50, $499.00. I still had the XR75 up until a few years ago when it was stolen from the garage. The Z50 was traded in on a used 1975 YZ125, first year monoshock. I had an 81 RD 350LC 2 stroke that was as fast as most 750 4 strokes till about 100 MPH. My current(old) bike is 1990 CR250.

Glen the forty's chiefs are probably 18,000 to 20, the thirty chiefs a little less. Now the four cylinder Indians bring 40,000 to 50,000, possibly more in excellent shape. These prices are a estimate of bikes I have seen for sale. Stan

No. The 500 twin did not appear until much later.

The X6 was a 250cc twin with 6 speed transmission.

If the rider knew what he was doing and was not too heavy, it would do 0 - 60 in six seconds. That was screaming in 1966.

Dean

Favorite..

honda 305 with chopped pipes with snuf-or-nots..

currently have a cb750, cl350, 305 scrambler, 305 super hawk, 300 dream, 250 dream, cb160 mini hawk, sport65 and a triumph trophy250w plus about 3-4 more basket cases

past bike, a sport 50 a cub 50, suzuki x6, two 450s two 305s and a mexican cooper 250

Hodaka Ace 90, 250 MX Yamaha, 400 Suzuki Enduro, and 6 or more others.. Sold my last bike at age 25.... But last fall at age 54, bought me a BMW 650 GS dual sport, and really enjoying it.

My only motorcycle, a blue 1981 Yamaha XS400. It was very clean for its age and had hardly been ridden. It was a neat old machine and a good one to learn on. I got it in 2009 with like 2400 miles on it, and sold it this past spring because I hardly ever rode it. I enjoyed tinkering with it at first, but when it needed tinkering every time I wanted to ride I sold it off.

Kevin

My favorite was a 78 or 79 Yamaha IT175.
Rode the snot outa that bike.
I currently have a 1983 Yamaha Heritage
Special 650.
Sad thing is ,I haven't rode it in 9yrs
since the kids came along. Couldnt take them to the sitters on it and there were diapers to buy!
It sits in the garage on My "Someday" list.

i learned early to be scared of road bikes. my first and last one was a kawasaki 750 two cycle. for one scary summer, it was unbeatable, and then that was that.

My first bike was a 1970 Honda SL 100...candy emerald green. Had a couple CB Honda street bikes a 350 and a 360...then my favorite street bike a 1980 Honda CX 500. I loved the sound of that water cooled v-twin and wish I still had it!

Had a lot of bikes, and liked them all for different reasons, but my favorite was the "72 Kawasaki 750. Fastest production bike in it"s day, and just plain unsafe, but what a fun bike. I bought it in "75 when I turned 17. I don"t think my parents had any idea what I had. Broke my pelvis on that one, and rebuilt it to better than new. I needed money for college several years later, and let it go. I have a rough one now, but it"s gonna take a lot of work to restore. The tractors seem to get most of my attention.

My first was a 1966 Yamaha 50 when I was 11, then when I was 14 I bought a 1968 Suzuki X5 from my cousin, sold it back to him years later and he still has it. I bought a 1969 Honda CL350 from my best friend at 17for $75. I brought it home in boxes and put it together and rode the heck out of it for several years. The 350 was one of the best bikes Honda ever built. I later bought a CL360 scrambler and hated it. My present bike is a 1979 Harley Sportster. I would have to say that the Suzuki and the Honda were my favorites though. I still have the little '66 Yamaha, It is restorable, but the leg shields are long gone and I don't think there is another pair of them left on the planet.

You too huh? I had one of these rockets for three years. Never had an accident but scared the holy crap outta' myself a few times! I traded it to a guy for a smaller Honda that was in better shape then mine. He dumped it three weeks later! He walked away from it though.....

I test rode both 500 and 750 Kawasaki triples in 71 or 72 but did not buy either. Overwhelming acceleration for a few thousand miles.

Dean

My favorite was a 48 model Harley panhead 74.
second would be the 36 Harley flathead 80.

Had a BSA 500 single which was not too bad. Had a few small Yamaha street bikes, but not as fun as the big hogs.

Started out with a hand me down 58 cushman eagle. Wasn't big enough to start it so I had to go places someone could start it for me.Still have it and the original title when dad bought it new for my brother. Went to a HD Sprint SS after the cushman. Would burn a hole in the piston after 1000 miles. You could depend on that. Then I got a HD XLCH as a basket case. Pushed it back up our hill several times after it didn't start going down hill. Sold it, probably a good thing , survived my motorcycle days. 4 cousins with motorcycles made a lot of scarry times. I can only wonder how my parents survived the times.

all i had was a cushman step thru, hand me down also. mine had the pedal and lever with a cog to crank. the lever was broken so i would wedge half of a clothespin in the centrifugal clutch and then push the scooter to start it. if and when it started the clothespin would flip out and you would circle back to retrieve it so you would have it for the next time.

My very first two wheels was a 48 cushman step through also. I do remember jamming sticks in the clutch to start it by pushing. Stan

Pre drivers lisence: Early "70s CZ 400; Uglier n sin including the leather belt that holds the tank on, but with just a tad bit of suspension modification I could ride with anybody"s new Elsinores, RMs, YZs and CanAms at the time.
Post-drivers lisence: 1985 Honda V65 Magna; have owned 4 of "em...fast AND comfy!

Nice, Chief!

I was stationed at Clark AFB in the Philippines when they came out. I had a Kawasaki 175 at the time and wanted a DT REAL bad. They outclassed anything on wheels at the time.

In fact, they're what inspired me to buy that RT360 when I transferred to Japan.

Been kind of looking for one as a project, but everything I've seen is either too far away, too expensive or too trashed.

I rescued a 62, I not sure of the year, Allstate 175 from a scrap pile in 73. Cleaned out the gas tank and cleaned out the carb. It ran great. I gave it to my brother so he could have a way to go to work. Wish now I had kept it. Currently ride a 2003 anniversary edition Harley Sportster 1200. I"m 65 and love the Sportster. I ride around 800 to900 miles a year on it.

First one I had was a '65 Honda 305 Scrambler. Not me on it, that's my youngun long long time ago.

13908.jpg

Got my first Goldwing in '75. Through the years I had 4 more Wings, including this '81 Interstate with sidecar and trailer.

Ducati 165 Monza Junior . Rode it with one guy two guys even four guys over logs through everything . It wasn't even a dirt bike. After discovering wheelies we burned up a clutch but mostly was real reliable and took a beating daily. After we aquired a speedo we got up to 45 mph on an oval track back in the woods and folded the forks under the bike after tangling into a little tree. Never did figure out why there was no fork stops.

1st was a "63 250cc Maico dirt bike, then a new "72 125ccMX Yamaha, learned to MX on that one, then a new "73 1/2 Penton 125cc. (white fenders small gas tank MX model, pretty rare now.) I have never had more fun doing ANYTHING in my life then racing motocross. Now I have a "73 250cc Yamaha DT-3 enduro, still working on that one. Plus a "77 Z50 Honda and a "83 Honda XR80 that I have done a lot of work on for the grandkids.

My first bike was a fifty sumtin Horex 350,i bought it for $5 at age 9.
