Anyone have experience planting Osage Orange also known as hedge trees? I have lots of hedge on my property and lots of hedge apples on the ground (the softball sized green fruit). I would like to mark the north boundry of my property with hedge. Maybe slice one in half and give it a shallow grave in broken ground?
 
bodock, horse apple, hedge apple, orange osage.
never planted one but be careful with the apple. the milky resin nearly impossible to wash off. plains indians used the wood to make their bows with due to its strength.
 
You are in Missouri right? The Missouri Department of Conservation sells seedling for almost nothing. You can go online and order them now. Dont wait too long or some sell out.
I have planted them before.

They will be shipped UPS and come wrapped up as bare root seedlings.

I have planted over 5,000 of them over the years.

On the big order I drove to the nursery in Licking Mo. and picked thme up so I could control the timing a little better as I was hiring some help to plant them.

Buy the seedlings. You may not live long enough to grow them from seed. We have a grove along a creek and they are quite beautiful , especially in the fall.Mrs. says it looks like a storybook. Ours are very large. No idea of their age. They do have a thorny side when they get big. Not like a Locust but they can poke.
 
I have never planted one but I have been trying for 6 years to cut them all down and kill them on my place. I hate them. They break down in every ice storm. Then grow out like a giant bush with a million stickers on them. I cut them down. poison the stump then burn all the wood in a big pile. I wish I had a transporter like on star trek and I would send you all of mine gladly. Cant tell you the number of flat tires I have had over the years from them.
