OT- 1997 dodge truck ignition coil prob

Can anyone tell me why the ignition coils go bad on these trucks? 360- v8. This is the second one in two years. (50k miles). Could there be too much input voltage? Volt gage on dash reads about 16volts. Or will a short in the wire from the coil to the distributor burn them out? I'm at a loss as to what it causing the problem.

I had a 1996 with the 360 V8 and it had 190,000+ miles on it when I sold it and it had the original coil on it. So I think you must have something going on ? but I wouldn't know for sure.
Clean and check your grounds from the coil all the way to the battery cables and engine ground straps. Possible coil wire and spark plug cables, cap & rotor and spark plugs.

My old boss would tell you it is because the distributor got wet. I don't think he ever changed his own oil even. :)

Older Chrysler vehicles (1980's) used a ballast resistor to cut voltage to the coil by about half. I don't know if a 1997 would still have a ballast resistor or not. If the ballast resistor was by-passed or shorted internally(unlikely) the coil would get full engine voltage all the time and the coil would have a shorter life due to the extra heat.

That would be my first question. Where was the repalcement coil come from? If you shopped around for the cheapest parts that may be the problem right there.

Both coils were NAPA OEM equivalent replacements. 1st replacement coil went bad after an antifreeze leak and the grounds were bad.

2nd one went bad 50k miles later just after some mild 40 deg weather and rain, this past friday in MN. I had recently cleaned all the ground wires this fall.

been a dodge fan for years,,,i would check that voltage at the coil with a good volt meter""""16 volts is a little too highshould not be above 14.5 if it is voltage regulater is bad and last but not least run a good ground wire from the engine to the coil bracketbe sure to clean bracket around coil fo a good grnd...these 2 issues are all i rver seen to eat coils up
