Ben says hello to you all

Went to see my aunt today, shes in a nursing home. If you remember the story of Ben I posted a while ago ,he is a farmer who is in the home because his wife is in very bad health. I stop to see him and he tells me stories of his farmall h that he had on his farm. I read so many good stories this week of people being kind that it prompted me to dust of the ertyl toy farmall h from my basement shelf and give it to him today when we went to see my aunt. Last time I posted about Ben many of you suggested I ask them at the nursing home if Ben could join in on our site,I did ask today, they said no,they didnt have the means to do that,Ben says his daughter is really in to computers,so I left him the site info, and he said he would give it to his daughter,I am hoping she will do it on a laptop for him to join us once in a while when she visits. Meanwhile he is waving to you all! He has many stories to tell you all,he told me many good ones today! He said he had 2 Farmall Hs and later on an M. He said you couldnt beat the Farmalls, great tractors and easy to work on. He said he used to love to rake hay with the H in 4th gear, half throttle !

Hello Ben, Never Farmed But do love them old tractors and pickups. Grew up around Dad's sawmill, Learned to drive on a 1946 Chevy Army Truck we used for a log skidder. Take care.

Great to hear Ben is doing well and I'm sure he will enjoy the tractor you brought for him. It will bring back many memories.
I have a comment about the nursing home not having computers or having access for the people in a nursing home.
Nowadays computers are easy for anyone to use and in a lot of cases, even someone in a nursing home. Can you imagine how much enjoyment people like Ben would get just watching Youtube videos? They could pass away hours watching videos on whatever. Also, reading posts on sites like this one Ytmag. A simple Google or Youtube search for whatever their interest might be would give them hours of enjoyment. It's not that they would have to post replies but just for them to be able to read about things of their interests would be great. In Ben's case, if he wanted to reply to a post he could wait until his daughter come and she could do that for him, if he's not able to type. I know if and when I go to a nursing home, I would be lost without a computer and the internet.
For the cost of living in an assisted living or nursing home you would think they would have internet access for their patients.
Again, I wouldn't want to be in a home without internet access.
Just my thoughts,
Dick

Hey Ben, Just want you to know that I'm almost done restoring the Farmall H that my grandfather bought new in 1942. It has passed thru three generations and never left the family. I'm kind of a John Deere guy, but the old H is very special to me. Hope to hear from yopu about your H.
Paul
P.S. Larry, If you can, print this and let Ben know about it. I'd like to hear his thoughts.
Paul

Larrry, You are one of the nicest Fellas I ever met. What a humane thing to do and I really appreciate your effort!! God Bless YOU!

Larry, You used pronouns, "they" said and "they" did. and such. I believe you got a real runaround. No way there is no DSL or wireless service in there, The staff wouldn't work ther if there wasn't
Go back and ask where the ONE PC that the "inmates" can use is located. If they can't find that then bring a real big pile of crap down on them. Get the local media involved. Get ALL the sponsors of all the patients there involved. That is simply inexcusable. I will get in my Tahoe tomorrow and get down there and installl what is needed.
Yes and BTW H in 4th gear raking hay with a IH 16 side delvery is a tune you gotta hear to believe. (3rd in the low spots)

The girl I talked to had a computer right behind her,I asked if there was a computer Ben could use,she said no. If he had his own in his room,he could use it,that is why I left some info for his daughter, but I never met her,Ihope she can do something for him, I dont think Ben would use a computer right off,but he is sharp and if she helped him Im pretty sure he could do it.

So in other words there is no computer available in the "common area". But there is service to the building. Tell you what, someone on here has a tower they don't need. I just gave one away. Let find a unit and you can walk it in there and ask them to hook it up. It is inexcusable that for 3000 dollars a month patients can't have acsess to a computer. Get the local paper involved. Maybe get an older unti from a school or library.

Larry, I have an older Windows XP laptop I would let Ben have.
Its a little slow by today's standards, but it works fine.
Email's open on modern view.

I was just wondering about Ben today when I was driving my H to go lift the roof of the wood shed. I am glad he is doing well. Tell him we all said hello!

You know Larry people like Ben really have nothing to think about other than memories. In nursing homes everything is done for them so they don't have to worry about day to day living. Anything that would help them kind of relive their memories would be great.
Whenever I visit a nursing home I see people just sitting in wheelchairs gazing into nowhere, it's sad. They could be looking at a computer screen and watching videos of interest to them. I'm sure there are many volenteers who could teach and help them to watch videos on places like Youtube.
It sound like the only reason Ben is there is because his wife is in poor health and he wants to be near her. That is a real loving relationship. It also sounds like Ben could, if willing, use a computer. I think once he could see what he could do on a computer he would love it. As you know, it's not difficult to use a computer and if a 5 year old child can operate a computer I'm sure someone 90 years old could too. And that is someone who knows nothing about a computer. I have friends who are almost 90 and they can use a computer and they really enjoy it.
In my opinion, computers are just as important in a nursing home as they are in schools. Every nursing home should have them for patients to use.
It's great that you take the time to visit Ben while visiting your aunt. I'm sure he really looks forward to your visits.
Thank you for being a good samaritan Larry.

Larry; I don't know your locale, but my latest puter purchase was from a computer recycler. They acquire outdated college/business units, clean the hard drives, install anti-virus software, etc. and the general public can purchase these at great prices. For Ben's needs, and most folks, something along these lines is affordable; something a care facility could look into also.

Gets my dander up that the law-breakers in the cross-bar hotels get computers, televisions, libraries, exercise equipment, etc. and that comes at OUR expen$e. Some punishment to breaking the law. We send billion$ of dollar$ to countries who despise this nation and Ben can't get computer access and tutoring...I'd best stop or the POOF button might be used. I don't know whether to spit tacks or cry.

When my late dad was at a nursing home, high school students were often bused in and did volunteer work at the facility. If such activity were available, computer tutoring for Ben and others would be a wizz for these young folks. Maybe contacting the local 4-H agent in your county and mentioning a great volunteer opportunity for youth could help Ben and others across this country.

It is post election time now but some politician could have made hay with this issue, possibly seeking available grant $'s residents of care facilities...those folks know how to use the media.

Gettin' a little long winded on this but...Ben, hope you are able to join in on the YT Forums and chime in about 'red iron'. I also admire your affection for your wife...something a lot of the younger folks don't seem to have the devotion for.

And as for you Larry... a blue star and an 'atta boy'
some folks raised you right!

Tell Ben that I said hello as well.

My initial guess is that if you round him up a computer as many here have suggested, that he will also need an air card and of course, an internet service provider. I don't see the nursing home allowing him or anyone to use their network, although that would be nice. That also would pretty much only leave him with dialup capabilities from his room, but most rooms don't have phones. Hmm. That pretty much leaves him a computer that has an air card (cellular), and then an internet provider like AOL, or... Of course, the near future is making personal computers obsolete, being replaced by Razors and the likes. Perhaps his daughter can get him a far better deal on such a hand held device.

Good luck, and do tell him Hello from everyone here, as well as best wishes.

Mark
