Youth Archery

We hosted an archery tournament for school kids yesterday. Had over 700 kids compete. It is wonderful to see them in the shooting sports.

David, what age group? I have grand kids in the CR area. I'm going to mention to my daughter that there is youth archery in the area and see what she thinks. Can you shoot (pun intended) me an email with who to contact in your area?

Wow I didn't think the abundant parents would allow such a thing since we all know the bow and arrow wasn't created for target shooting.

We had that 40 years ago in a town park.
Yes, I said a town park.
Times have really changed.
It was unsupervised also.
The town workers would set up targets and leave the bow and arrows out for anyone who wanted to target shoot.

I wonder what would happen if you wanted to have a rifle shooting tournament?

I can match that or MAYBE even top that. Back in the late '70s, when I was in high school, we had a high school sponsored FFA game hunt every year. The FFA members would meet at the high school, pick teams and go out and have a contest to see who could shoot the most pheasant, quail, rabbits and squirrel on a certain Saturday during hunting season. Yes, this was with high school kids shooting shotguns and .22 rifles. Then everybody would bring back the game, clean the game, and have a wildlife feast about a week later.
Can you imagine the liability of that today? One, the liability of a shooting accident and, two, the liability of people actually eating wild game.
You know the real irony? Last May, my eighth grade kid took a 30 year-old rubber band gun to school, actually the very same school. It was basically a stick with two clothes pins glued to it. Two teachers went ballistic and almost had him kicked out of school, not because the thing could shoot a rubber band and cause injury, but because it was a "gun".

Hey, that's great...

Son and I are trained 4-H shooting sports leaders. Required training to do under the 4-H umbrella..... Our problem is finding kids that would like to shoot. Air rifle, .22, muzzle, shotgun, bow & arrow - you name it, we've got it covered.

Rick,

Mount Vernon, Alburnet, Anamosa, Central City, and Marion have teams. I was approached by Linn Mar this week on helping them get going.

I think the zero tolerance thing is stupid. They should take the "weapon", call the parents and talk with the kids. It does much more good to educate than to punish.

Our kids can take the bows to school, but are not allowed arrows, we provide those at practice.

Here in MO. we have the Youth Hunter Education Challange. YHEC. Local sportsmans club sponsors it.

Well attended.

Good to see so many young folks take part.

They do archery, muzzleloader, .22, general sports knowledge, etc.

Your tournament was a great success! My son shoots for Cardinal HS. We were there. I was impressed with the facilities that you had the tournament in. It was great to go to a tournament and not be packed in like sardines! Congrats. Really enjoyed the hospitality!
