OT: Ice Fishing (pics)

Several people ask some questions about these crazy people who fish through holes in the ice. We had to drive over by Mille Lacs lake today so I stopped and took a few pics.

Lake info here http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/lakefind/showreport.html?downum=48000200

Just in case any of you boys/gilrs in the south have any question......yes that is a lake. Yes they are driving on the ice. Those villages are ice houses.

Well, at least there aren't a lot of hills involved. I hate hills when they're icy. You're lucky to be in an area where the lakes don't have hills.

Wait for it. . . Wait for it. . .

Mike--this is the Bay of Green Bay in Lake Michigan....the rough looking area behind these happy campers are jagged pieces of ice that break up/refreeze from wind and wave action. Some places out there look like moonscapes...6' high chunks of ice (little mountains)..would you believe there was even a current flowing underneath the ice at this spot?

Mille Lacs is large, but not the largest in MN. It's about 15 MILES across! MNut lives near the SE corner of it. They actually plow roads across the lake in the winter to make travel easier, and have direction signs. Some ice houses are more than elaborate, and thousands spend the rest of the year along the shore, waiting for the next season.

We have fished that lake several times, but only in the summer. I especially like Arrowhead Point on the west side. And the big flats right in the middle has always been good for us. We have been up there in the winter and ran snow machines across some of those lakes too.

My father-in-law was from Mora and my wife was born in Duluth. Then they moved south for warmer weather. They ended up in Texas. I have moved her to paradise (Indiana) 42 years ago today. Today is our anniversary! Still a lot of relatives living across the south east side of the state.

well, i'm one of those boys from the south and i
thought they were cows in a pasture.
actually, reminds me of the movie "grumpy old men".
must say this thou, glad its up there, way up there.
how do you know when to start and when to finish?

Although the setting for Grumpy Old Men was on the Missippippi river down around Wabasha, it was mostly filmed around Lindstrom/Chisago City.
I'm on Cross Lake, other side of Pine City, about 5-6 miles from Oliver Lover. Ice was about a foot thick 2 weeks ago.

Little guys first fish about 2 years ago on Leech lake. I set the drag down and he managed to reel it all the way up. It"s too bad it had to back in the Lake (slot fish)

We have been out tip-up fishing in a small lake out behind the house the last couple weekends here just up I-94 of the twin cities. Got a foot of good ice. Last sat. we had seven northern on the ice. It was 25 and sunny. Had our two year old grandaughter ice fishing for the first time. Just a fun day on the ice. And a fish fry to finish the day. Dale

Rick, thanks for posting the pic. I enjoy the ice fishing pic. I have never done ice fishing. I never seen A lake freeze over like that.

Yup, nothing a fellow can't find satisfying about hard-water fishing.

Not much rif-raf out there, no ticks, misquitos, your beer doesn't get warm- if you are inclined to sip a barley pop.

A spring cancer fundraiser nearby features fillets of bluegill and sunfish with breading so thin you could read a newspaper through it. They even peal the skin off the fillets...those folks just live for the hard water season.

Back-in-the-day, early to mid 1960's, our family of four would drive down to the Mississippi River, carry out the hand-powered ice auger and we kids took turns lugging the 2' by 2' by 2 1/2' high wooden box with the ice skimmer, poles and tackle box out onto the ice/snow. Woolen mittens, gloves, long-handles under wool or corduroy pants...years before snowmobile suits, TV's (that's televisions folks)...oh yeah, dad's cigarette lighter-fluid hand warmer in a purple velvet bag.

In those days, the railroads ran passenger trains along what is now called 'The Great River Road' along the southwest coast of Wisc. I recall seeing observation cars coupled in the array of cars.

I wouldn't doubt mom packed us peanut butter and brown sugar sandwiches on home-made bread, just like in tobacco harvest. "...sticks to your ribs and gives you energy."

Thanks for stirring those good memories, mom will turn 75 tomorrow...sure would be nice if she was sober again.

Mille Lacs.........ahh home sweet home. I have lived 1 mile off the
east shore for 33 years, and have never ice fished on the lake.
Summer fished it several times, but I actually prefer local smaller
lakes for sumer fishing in the land of 10,000 (closer to 15,000)
lakes. Mille Lacs is way to full of tourists and people from the twin
city metro area who only think of themselves while on the water. I
like a quiet lake with 5 or 6 boats quietly fishing. Not 1,500 boats
speeding all over the place with 200 jet skis whipping in and out of
the fishing areas.

LOL we actually drove out on the lake a little to take some of those photos where MN 18 cuts back to the east. The rest were shot on the north shore. Went to Pine City to drop our son off there, his gun smith classes start again next week.

They plow roads on a lot of lakes up here. Our first winter here in 71 we lived on lake Osakis. I watched the city plow go across the lake while eating breakfast before school. That was the first time I ever saw anyone drive on the ice.

Heck they even ice race. If I can (major storm headed here) I'll try to get a few pics of that and post it. I had a friend up here before I retired from the Army. He took some vid of ice racing and when we got back to Ft Riley and I think he showed that tape to every one in the unit while telling him that all people from MN were crazy or stupid.

It's fun when some crazy guy in the area has to be the first guy to drive his truck out on the ice. There is a guy around here who has put 3 nice pickups through the ice trying to be first. One of them was two weeks old, he hadn't made the first payment yet. Truck was wrote off. Makes for expensive fish.

Ice houses or Nut houses? LOL

Something I've wondered about since I heard that story years ago,

Do you really keep the worms warm by holding them in your mouth?

Now see, that's not ice fishing, that's house fishing!

Here's some REAL ice fishing.

This is my fishing buddy - I wish you could see it better, but we're on an ice island.

Floating out in the middle of our favorite pond.
It's only about 20 feet wide. We canoed out to it.

I'm sure if you look closely enough, you'll see some bottles in the canoe that helped in convincing us that this was a good idea.

I've spent a few days on the ice but I moved south now. I have a lake lot with my three sisters on Lake Calhoun near Spicer just outside of Willmar. Have relatives who still live on the lake. My last ice fishing trip was with my Uncle the last three days of safe ice in the spring of 1998. He died that June of lung cancer. We had holes drilled all over the place and just moved around with the fish. It was super warm and the ice melted 10 inches in those three days. Had to lay boards out on the edge the last day to get out there. Melting water was running down into our holes. Ate fish until we burst and took plenty home for the freezer also.

We fished for panfish with light line but every now and then you'd hook into a pike. Uncle Leonard would come running and stomp on the ice, scaring the pike and pealing line off. And laughing his butt off. Great memories!
