There is a lady in my area who has a 86 VW rag top. It is called a Cabriolet. It has been sitting inside since 08, and has 105 thousand miles. It is a std shift gas model. The body is in good shape, looks like the top is new. Is it worth 1,700.00? I know nothing about these cars, how about you? Stan

I would have a good long look at the underside of the body before I spent any money on one. If it is getting rusted, it will be a very expensive repair job.
That might be an OK novelty car for weekends, but rough and cramped for every day use.
I had a Rabbit for several years, and wouldn't want another one.

I am looking for a small light car to tow behind my motorhome. Probably will not be driven much. This is a left coast car so rust isn't a big problem Stan

My cousin got one about a year ago same as you describe but 90,000 miles payed $1,000. Maybe he was just lucky. Also check for rust under the dash and around windshield.

Get a Suzuki Samaria it's great for a tow car but lousy if you have to go very far in it. I had one towed it all over the place fun little car that can latterly go anywhere. One of the best off roads in the country. Makes the big Jeeps look bad out in the San dunes when go past one stuck in the sand. I drove and towed mine 204,000 miles and hardly did anything to it.

I had a '75 Rabbit, one of the first years it was made. I liked it, as it got great mileage and had plenty of legroom and headroom (I'm 6'3"), but had carb problems continuously. A later version with FI would probably be okay. I don't have any idea about the Cabriolet top mechanism, but I would expect it to be problematic.

BTW, it was a great snow car. not much ground clearance, but it was smooth on the bottom and light enough to push easily if you did get stuck.

Hey Fred.

Don't know if that vintage had the problem but lots of Rabbits had big problems with moisture getting behind the dash and shorting things out.

I had one and had at least 5 relays spliced in before I finally junked it.

Great car to drive though. Handled like a go-kart and lots of leg room.
