I"m looking at 1855 oliver.Is this a good thing or bad.thay said it a 1972 but it has a engine oil cool buy the oil filter. is that right????I"ve heard soom bad thing about the 1855.Is this true.HELP.
 
Gas or diesel? how are the tires? does it start easly?,smoke excessively? clutch ok? How do the fluids look? You have to look it over and see the overall condition of the old girl any 40 year old tractor could turn into a HUGE moneypit if it was poorly maintained,But those old tractors are built TOUGH and they are relitivly simple to work on and sooner or later you will have to tinker with it but thats part of the fun
 
It is a diesel 1855.I"ve read that thay like to throw rods out the side of the block.I"m would like to pull a 6 row planter with it.
 
I ran a 1955 for 20 years as my big tractor. They are good on fuel and start good. The 6/3 trans is a nice set up and they a pretty graceful tractor to drive. Make sure it has the oval oil cooler on the rh side of the engine, this is a 1955 engine. The engines have kinda small rod and main journals but with some updates they can be mad to hold together ok. The main problem was the two piece pin bushings would get worn and start pounding this would then break a rod bolt and out the rod came through the side of the block. If the engine has the newer 1 piece wrist pin bushings and the updated 12 point rod bolts it will hold together fine as long as the rod and main bearing clearance is within spec. This is not an engine to lug but with 18 speeds there is no reason to as they have a very nice gear selection with a speed for any job.
