vaccination for calves?

Talk to your local veterinarian. They are most qualified and will know what to recommend for your situation, and developing a good relationship with a professional will save you money in the long run.

I shouldn't have been so short with you, but many people try to take shortcuts and it ends up being the hard and expensive way. I believe we owe it to our animals to give them the care they need. You are on the right track with a 7-way vaccination. On our operation we give products that cover BVD, PI3, BRSV, IBR, Haemophilus/Somnus, several Clostridials, Pasturella and Mannheimia (respiratory). There are others you may want as well depending on what you are doing with them, also whether they are weaned or not, and their prior Vx history. Modified live shots are probably the better way to go as far as providing the most effective protection, but killed vaccines have their place too. Many on here could make recommendations, but its mostly going to be anecdotal; that is why, in my opinion, it is better to ask someone who deals with livestock health issues everyday. Good luck.

If you are a cow calf operator it will pay to check with the sale barn you use to sell your calves and find out what programs their buyers prefer and pay a premium for. All vet medica companies, most state universities and many livestock dealers have their own certified vaccination programs and accredidation requirements, all the programs are simular and all are part of the overall pre-conditioning of calves that buyers pay a premium for, weaned 45 plus days, nnalert, wormed etc.

Here's what my local salesbarns have had on their website for years:

We strongly recommend vaccinating & weaning. You can expect a 10 to 1 buyer ratio on calves with 2 rounds of shots, that are weaned at least 45 days versus calves that are not.

Recommended Vac Program:

Four-Way Virus nnalert for IBR-P13-BVD-BRSV
7-way Clostridial + Hemophilus Somnus
Pasteurella
External and internal parasite control

Administer all shots in the neck
Booster shots at least 14 days prior to sale
Knife cut while still on cows
Dehorn prior to weaning

I worked out the details with my vet supply store.
