How long does one last at your house?
I always put the date on a new bag. Dunno why.
This bag was empty.
Poor George had half a ration this morning so I had to supplement it with a piece of toast.
Got some more PetCo this evening so now she wont starve.

Got a black lab that goes through 50 lb about every month and a half to two months. Used to go through more than that but I started spending a couple of bucks more for the better, higher protien food and now he doesn't eat quite as much. Guy at the Seed and Feed shop where I got it told me that would happen but I was sceptical until I saw it for myself.

Ultradog, When we had our 2 old Heelers and a dozen barn cats a 40 lbs sack of Old Roy lasted just over 2 weeks. Now with a new Heeler puppy, both old Heelers have since died, still have about a dozen barn cats,, a sack last a touch over 3 weeks.

40 lbs Purina lasts 10 days. A Brit a Lab and an English Setter. Here's Sparks, the female 4 yr old.

How much does she weigh? That's about 1.5 lbs of food a day. An Older female like that should weigh 70 lbs max.

How long a bag lasts partly depends on what kind of food you buy for your pooch. We feed Science Diet to our 90 pound chocolate lab. Seems to last a long time but I don't keep track of dates like you do. We fed him cheaper food for awhile but it seemed like it went out the back of the dog about as fast as it went into his mouth and he was always hungry. We figured we were spending almost as much on a larger volume of cheap food as we were on a smaller volume of the higher priced stuff, and we don't have as much 'lawn fertilizer' to step in. Jim

Well a forty pound bag of dog food lasts one week at the most here. Then the twenty pound bag of cat food lasts one week. twenty pound bag of cat litter: one week.

Pet count as I type this:

Seven house cats
two shop cats
10-12 barn cats out side( they only get food on real cold days)

Three house dogs
two outside dogs

I enjoy the company the pets give us. Plus in this old farm house there is plenty of room.

50 lbs last 7 days at our place. 3 dogs and about 8 farm cats get all they want. Probably not the best way to feed them but really they limit themselves well, are not overweight and are very healthy. So I'm not going to fix what isnt broken.

Its worth every penny too! Nothing better than having 3 eager dogs sooo happy to see me when I come home EVERY day. A person can never have a bad day when you have a nice pet. (EVEN A DARN CAT!)

Jim, I agree with the feeding higher class dog food. My daughter is a DVM in Kansas City area, and insisted I feed IAMS to my yellow lab. I have switched to the senior formula now and she loves it. Dale

3 dogs...A 29 lb Brittany/Papillon mix, 12 years old...a 6 year old 16 lb Papillon, and an 8 lb 3 year old Maltese Yorkie mix. We measure out their food to keep them @ ideal weight. I believe the bag of feed we get 'em is some odd number like 44lbs (???) It'll last about 4-1/2 weeks. We feed 'em Purina Pro Plan. Smallest dog is a flippin' dynamo! She eats more than the other two combined and still doesn't gain weight. We used to breed and raise Labs. Had as many as 10 at one time (4 adults) They liked to ate us out of house and home.

Nothing like having a bunch of dawgs waiting at the back door when you come in from a hard days work, tails a-waggin'! Got one (Maltese/Yorkie) sittin' in my lap right now.

Wow, that's alot of cats! Do they all have names? Lol, my friend has about 13 barn cats, some I have to feed in a different barn because they don't get along! I think I go threw about 25 pounds in less than 2 weeks.

Did ya ever figure out what your dog food costs per pound? Then compare that cost to the price of chicken or turkey. Here I can buy turkeys for $.88/lb and chicken for $.99/lb. That's a lot cheaper than $4.80/lb. for the dog food I buy for my dog. Lucky she's a small dog. She likes chicken and turkey more than the stuff in the bag, so you can guess what she eats must of the time.. Who knows what's in the stuff in the bag. I can imagine what goes into the crumbles in the sack and it ain't steak.
Nothing better for your dog than turkey or chicken, plus I can help them eat it. I can mix their portion with some rice or cooked vegetables and the dog loves it.
Do some research and see what goes into dog and cat food. You would be amazed and I can tell you you wouldn't want to eat it. A key word here is rendering companies. Enough said..

Popper, I mis-spoke. When you mentioned IAMS the lightbulb lit up. It's IAMS for the dog and Science Diet for the cats. Same reasoning goes for the cats. We picked up some cheap Wally World cat food for them last summer and they were 'eliminating' all over the place and acted famished. Do you need some cats over there? We have 50 and only need 10 or so.LOL Jim

A few of the barn cats have names but most of them do not. All the other Pets have names. We catch all the cats we can each year and give them shots to help keep distemper under control.

I am not a big cat person but these barn cats earn their keep. There are 3-4 old mother cats that are just hunting all the time. I saw one of them today clear out to the grain bins with a big rat. The bins are a half mile from the rest of the barns/house.

We have a bunch of kittens every spring. I usually have more people wanting good barn cats than we have kittens. It is genetic on them being good hunters or not. I don't move them until the mother cats have just about weaned them. The mothers have taught them a lot of hunting skills by then.

I buy a 40 pound bag and it doesn't last long enough. I'm feeding 4 pups 8 momnths old, one 4 months, one 4 years, an English setter (11) and two house beagles. They get adult food. I figure 2 to 2-1/2 cups per day for the pups. Based on 40# @ 2 cups per pound, a bag lasts the pups around 8-10 days.

For the Lab eating 50# in a month or longer, that doesn't seem like much food.

Maybe you should change your handle to DF Poor, (dog food poor for those of whowho don't do acronims) LOL. Rocko.

I watched a documentary about the Greeley expedition to the Arctic last nite. They found that the drum of sled dog food that they opened was spoiled so they dumped it out. The starving men dug into it and it was gone in minutes.

When I had 2 English Mastiffs, 100 lbs of dry, 30 cans of wet per month.

Now 2 Mt. Feist Terriers, 40 lbs in 6 weeks or so.
