I have known many who claimed sucess while following the almanac's reccomended planting dates but until now I had to plant when I had the time.
Kids gave me volume 196 so I have been looking through it. Here's a few upcoming dates.
Jan 1-3 Best for killing weeds, briars, poison ivy and other plant pests.
Jan 11 Good for planting sweet corn, beans and peppers.
Jan 14-16 Extra good for planting peppers, tomatoes, peas and other vine crops.

Every herbicide I have used clearly says plants should be vigorusly growing. Do any of you have green poison ivy now?

If these planting dates are real,it's no wonder my garden wilts about the time it reaches full production since I plant 2 to 3 months later and still have to cover plants for frost protection.
Am I waiting too long getting out the gate planting in North Texas? Where can you plant the things above in January?

(quoted from post at 21:27:12 12/28/12) Volume 196 is the Austrailan version....lol.
Well if that's the case, wouldn't planting now be equivilent to planting here in June? I'm pretty sure that doesn't work.

I guess depending on where in Texas, you can plant
whenever it's warm enough ( I should have put my glasses
on to see you were in Texas) in Ohio we're lucky to get the
garden in before Memorial day.

Our recommended planting dates for a fall crop of tomatoes are 6/1 to 7/1
Since Austrailan is a big country that covers alot of climate zones they could be starting a fall crop. LOL!!!!!!!!!

But really or spring dates for starting tomato seeds are 1/1 to 3/15 but I could not see planting corn that early. 2/15 might work but not anything in January.
I think the almanac goes on moon stages and what crop (above or below ground) would work on what dates. It is up to you to decide what month to use based on your climate zone.

Dad used to start his tomato seedlings in a hot bed. I never paid attention to when he did. I was probably at school when he did it. About four years ago I decided to start some tomato seeds in, I think early April, I didn't realize how long it took them to grow to transplanting size! They were ready to set out for late tomatoes!
