I found an old pocket-sized seed corn book from the 60's .

I thought this page was interesting.

Pretty progressive for 1962. Heck we still have guys here that won't plant that thick, or apply that much fertilizer. And then they wonder why they're corn doesn't yield as well as ours...

And that isn't even that much fertilzer. That population would have been almost twice what was common in 1962. And odds are it would have been in wide rows, too, which is really crowding things. Mike

Brings back memories. We planted d805 for years. Here in n Alabama we planted at around 15000 per acre.

Would that be in some of that awesome Illinois black soil? Thought it was good down there. That probably helped a lot.

I'm not sure what soil types are in Edgar county . It is on the Illinois/Indiana border .

My guess is that you are correct in thinking it is good dirt .

Illinois does have some good dirt, but only average soils where I farm .

I was wondering about the row width and agree with Mike A. that it was probably wide rows, either 38 or 40 inch rows but it could have been narrower as some progressive farmers were starting to plant in narrower rows. I wonder also how it was harvested....assuming a combine although not everyone had switched by then from ear corn harvesting.
