Ok another new way

I was a little taken aback last night at former Mother in law's Christmas gathering. (MIL still likes me). MIL in lew of giving shirts that don't fit and underpants that chaffe, chooses to hand out cards to the oldsters with a little cash that fits all. She handed those envelopes to my 11 year old nephew to hand out. MIL wrote each person's name on the envelopes in her elegant but highly readable hand writing. Nephew had to have SIL tell him who's were who's. Seems that cursive or script writing and reading are no longer taught in school! SIL say's the schools teach basic printing and all the rest is keyboard now and with spell check, learning to spell isn't a real priority either. Oh...Boy...

We had this exact conversation yesterday at my wife's family's dinner...her grandma wrote in some cards and my wife's cousins, elementary/middle school age..had no idea what they said. Sad since so many historic writings of importance are in cursive.

I've made my mind up that my last will and testiment will be written in my own hand and each will have to read it to see if I left anything for them. If they don't know me well enough to read my writing, I don't know them well enough to leave them anything. (the dog excluded).

Okay, first; Merry Christmas!
Secondly: Handwriting IS becoming less and less taught. Computers ARE here to stay in most field of learning and earning $$$$. However, handwriting involves more neuro muscular systems and should be taught and developed as long as possible!
When kids learn to spell, punctuate, etc; they learn it deeper when handwriting over typing. Stats and experience back that statement up.

At my daughters work she needs to print instructions, no new employees can read cursive as well.
Two years ago I was training new employees for a delivery company. None of them understood what a map was...
hope their gps never fails...

Yep school are no longer teaching reading writing and math they are teaching key board computers and how to be wimps. Sad but if it hits the fan which it will do kids now days will not be able to cope with things well

It's the same here. Somehow these brilliant education overseer's have decided that teaching kids to be illiterate is the way to go. These kids are going to be adults one day & have to write an X and have it witnessed because they can't sign their name on every legal document they sign. I think it's a sad disgrace & none of the teachers around here like it but they teach what they are told.

Heard a story about American students writing college entrance exams.I can"t remember the number but I was floored by the percentage that answered the essay questions printing in block letters rather than cursive.Apparently the proportion of printers is increasing every year.

I have to say this is a boon to us oldsters anyway, With the youngsters not getting smarter (more intelligent but not smarter) and we're certainly not getting dumber. If we just stop getting aggravated and start developing ways to capitalize on the new stupidity using our obsolete and antiquated skills, social security will be nothing but chump change.

My fifth grader is learning cursive. She says half of the class don"t care, and the other fifth grade teacher is not teaching it.

She really takes pride in writing as neat as possible in cursive and making sure everything is spelled correctly.

I guess we will all see what the future holds. Maybe cursive will be in the Smithsonian right next to cameras that require film.

Rick

Funny you should mention cameras that take film. The 11 year old nephew's Father has been a patent protection technition at Eastman Kodak in Rochester for the past 25 years. He's sweating bullets.
It's great that your daughter takes such pride, she'll do very well I'm sure.

Ken, if that's the case, then how is anyone supposed to get through Medical School to become a Doctor if they can't read, write, or understand Latin. Open a Gray's Anatomy book, all of the parts of the human body have Latin names. There is so much in Medicine that is based on Latin that it would be almost impossible to become a Doctor without knowing Latin.

A whole generation of Illerates are now in the public schools, only thing they know is to push a button or drag their finger across a screen. They'll be just what the Chinese owned sweat shops will require here in the future.

Our late Superintendent of Public Instruction here in Indiana come up with the brillant idea of doing away with teaching of cursive writing in our schools and now he is gone, lost election,
who would have thought that.

Ok, my question is...are the voters going back and change this or are they accepting this and moving on?

Walt I don't need to know speak latin to know what certain latin words mean. All a doctor has to know is the correct names for the body parts and some conditions. That by no means makes it so they can't be required to learn latin, knowledge never hurts anyone.

Rick

I agree that Latin is a dead archaic language of little use.
French and some other languages are headed in the same
direction.
Classroom time should be spent on math, English , history,
geography and shops. Too little time in school to waste on
Latin . Worse yet is the Rainbow day or peace day that is
included once and a while. I told my kids to feel free to walk
out of such immoral brain washing. If a teacher complains,
direct the conversation to myself.

My Mrs. (56 yrs. old) still can't read a map to save her soul. It's all lines and colors to her. I've heard it's a female thing (seriously). Most women's brains apparently aren't wired that way.

Witness the recent large storm disasters... Katrina, Sandy, etc. Lots of lost people looking for Uncle Sugar to bail them out.

Yep and the people had no clue how to do for them self's. Back in 2007 when we where with out power for a week I got by because I could think for my self and rig up a way to keep warm. Was not the best way and the safest way but I got by
