Montana Trip

My wife, 20 year-old son and a friend are going to Kalispel Mt. after xmas to see relatives. She hasn't seen her cousin in almost 50 years. My son and his friend are going snowboarding. What will she run into as far as travel over the mountains once she gets past Bozeman Mt. she will be driving a Nissan Altima? Will be travelling from central Iowa.

She shouldn't have any problems. Bozeman to Missoula is interstate. Missoula to Kalispell is a good two lane road. Snow plows keep it open.

A few years ago, cutting from billings to great falls, weather was clear as a bell. Hit a blizzard at judith gap, took me over 4 hrs to go 108 miles, and was in an 01 dodge 1500 4x4. Weather out there can slip up on you, be prepaird.

Some passes that require chains sometimes before you get to Bozeman. Check the Montana road cams to see what it is like in real time. These pictures where taken 2 years ago in June on a trip to Kalispel. If they go that far they should go as far into Glacier Park as it is open to. Lots of good scenery in there. The river ones are from in Glacier. We couldn't go all the way through because it was still closed higher up.

Just after Bozeman (nine miles), she will be going by my house. That time of year you don't go through Glacier Park. I don't know if any of it will be open. Any roads which are intended to be open all year are almost never closed because of weather. If it is snowy or icy, slow down.

Actually part of Glacier is open. 11 miles of it anyway, not the part through the high elevations. The part that is open is where the pictures of the water and some of the mountains were from in June. I think we could only go as far as Avalanche.
Glacier

My son and I were out to Missoula in 1999. At that time we went through Glacier. Beautiful. He always talked about going back. He was 6 at the time. Guess he will get to go again. I can't get off work to go this time. I'm sure the wifes cousins will take her sight seeing. Thanks everyone and Have a Merry Christmas!!

Hey Paul, Would you mind giving me a contact number in case she has trouble? Email open. Thanks, Mark..

Beautiful photos. I think you may currently reside in heaven - just beautiful. Thanks for posting.

This time of year, you cannot tell just what you might run into, weather wise, traveling in Montana, or for that matter, Wyoming or Idaho.

If I was sending my Wife and son out on such a trip, I would obtain the proper set of cable chains for the tires on the car they were driving, as well as chain tighteners. And I would make absolutely sure my son really knew how to install and tighten the chains so they will stay on, but not hit the bodywork. I would also send them off with a shovel and probably some sand or cat litter. Good flashlights and supplies to keep them going if they get stranded for an extended time period are also good ideas.

Or the roads might be just fine...you never know.

There is wonderful skiing near Kalispell at Whitefish Mountain. Hope it all works great and they have lots of fun!
