O/T Old Western shows

After watching alot of newer shows I'm convinced that there are not very many good ones compared to the early shows, especially Western series. I'm thinking of Branded (how did this show only air for two years?), The Rifleman, Gunsmoke, the Guns of Will Sonnett, and Bonanza. The Big Valley was a good show too. Always liked the endings on that more than Bonanza. The four Cartwrights riding away at the end of practically every episode is sort of boring.

I liked the original series The Wild Wild West. Good show til they made the movie with.......well.......you know.

I agree, I like the shows you mentioned, I have direct tv, it seems like all repeats. And these reality shows really get me, like gold rush for example, or the logging shows, if they don't get 10 ounces of gold, or get 20 loads to the mill today, right now, there gonna go broke tomorrow! Or if they can't fix this machine there gonna be doomed! Way to much drama. I like The Rockford files, Hawaii five 0, emergency, the a- team, hunter ect, I should cancel the direct tv! But I like the TVG channel! Lol

In an interview when the movie was being made, Robert Conrad opined that Jackie Chan would be his choice to play Jim West. The movie was a bit over the top for my tastes.

Just finished watching The Lone Ranger on the TCM channel. As a kid I remember watching it with my Grandpa among others. SHON

KXTX out of Dallas used to show those (and Rawhide) throughout the 90's. One day I turned on the tv and it was Univision.

Haven't had much use for tv since then.

'ME TV' showed up a year or so ago, it's an over the airwaves antennea deal that some stations piggyback onto their channel. I get it as 5.3 around here, the ABC affilate has it and a few others.

They play Rifleman, Big Valley, Gunsmoke, and Bonanza as their lineup in the afternoon one way or another.

Watched them as a kid, but now watching them as an adult, they can have a lot more adult themes than I remembered.

Big Valley started out with Heath showing up as the bugger son (1/2 brother they didn't know about) coming back home, that was a lot more than I'd expect from that time period.

(Now that's funny, had to substitute 'bugger' for the real word they used in the show, autocensor didn't allow it here....)

Rifleman has a lot of rather right-leaning themes.

Got to fix my antennea, the set of 5's don't come in so good, used to, thought it was just the typical fall period when the sun interferes, but past that time now.

i like to watch those myself, and i agree the modern shows just lack something, the old western plot is pretty simple, basicly good over eivel, but the stars of those shows were much better quality actors than most of the newer ones there are a few good actors around, butr most are just lame, only thing i am bothered about on bonanza is there isnt much age differents between hoss and ben, lol

Matt Dillon's my favorite- can you tell?- he seemed like a nice guy- 'cept with the bad guys. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

I thought Branded was really good too. I haven't seen it run for over twenty years. Glad I watched it when I had the chance.

I grew up watching the old westerns with all the shooting an killing outlaws, but I felt like they tought me the difference between right and wrong, not like the crap on tv now. I can still watch GUNSMOKE everday never get tired of it.

My youngest boy loves Gene Autry and I like him too. I never cared for Chuck Connors in anything he ever did, something about him drove me nuts. Anyways, Gunsmoke, the older ones, Have gun Will Travel, Wagon Train, Rawhide, Lawman, the one with Steve McQueen- I forget the name, most of the older black and white ones. Big Valley was pretty well acted, but for goodness sakes, I don't care how desperate you are nobody was going to pass up Audra (Linda Evans) for Victoria!!! (ancient Barbara Stanwick). I realize they were catering to "The Big Stars" ego, but that old broad was always having people attempt to get some nooky from her while leaving Audra tied up to a tree someplace. Horse puckey! I liked the Bonanzas that concentrated on Hoss. They were usually humorous and pretty good. Couldn't stand Little Joe then or now. Little sissy boy was always crying. I used to have to suffer through "Little House on the Prairie" cuz my folks liked it and he cried every 30 seconds on that one too.

Anyone remember "Heck Ramsey" and "McCloud"? They were later period 1970's shows I think. I remember liking them. And "Cades County" with Glenn Ford and Edgar Buchanan! I always liked Glenn Ford. "Death Valley Days" with John Paine I think, Wild Wild West, Lone Ranger, SGT PRESTON! even if he wasn't a cowboy!, The Cisco Kid, Maverick, Laredo, of course Lancer, Here Come the Brides and Alias Smith and Jones- my wifes favorites, The Virginian- my grandmothers favorite, Rin Tin Tin, CHEYENNE! gotta love Clint Walker, Cimmaron, Daniel Boone wan;t a "western" but I really liked it, Sky King was another not quite western, Rifleman.....man, there were a lot of them.

The show with Steve McQueen is "Wanted Dead or Alive". I was given the whole series for Christmas and have been watching it lately. It ranks right up there with the best. There were 94 episodes in only 3 years. Love it. Mike

The Rifleman was a good show, Gunsmoke too, Have gun will travel. The crap that is played today cannot compare to the old stuff. With the decline of TV since the 80s one has to wonder what TV will be like 20 years from now. (And we think is bad now)

I was thinking more along the lines of "Die-Hard"..!!!

BUT..Any "Randolph Scott" film has my Vote...!!

Ron..

I was 8 in 1950 when we got our tv. I quickly became a fan of westerns. anyone remember, we had some 15 minute shows then.. I liked Lone Ranger & Roy Rodgers but my favorite was Hopalong Cassidy I had a H.C. savings account at the local bank, which put me in "a H.C. fan club'. wow ! Later I was a big fan of Steve McQueen, Wanted Dead or Alive and Have Gun Will Travel. Good ole shows.

The Rifleman, Maverick, Rawhide, and Have Gun Will Travel were our favorite westerns.

My SIL will not watch many old westerns with me!!! BECAUSE I COMMENT ON SIX SHOOTERS THAT SHOOT 16 TIMES WITHOUT RELOADING AND SUCH THINGS. Other than that they are GREEEEAT !!!!!!!

AH! Now you're getting into movies instead of TV. Randolph, Coop and Joel McCRea! Add in The Duke, Jimmy Stewart, Glenn Ford, Roy Rogers, Gene....the list gets pretty long!

i like that too got wonder how much that nasty ol gun of his hurt his hands and arm when he fired it lol kind of like john Wayne, sidekick in either rio lobo, or rio brave,i cant remember which right now where the sidekick had that cut down shotgun, man that thing had to be painfull

Don't foget Hopalong Cassidy!

Used to watch him and "The Cisco Kid" every Sunday morning.....

"...Oh, Seesco....","....Oh Pancho....."

How about the serialzed westerns that they played on Walt Disney Presents?
There was the Saga of Andy Burnett, There was Davey Crocket, There was Alfago Baca (who had nine lives), And Dan'l Boone, and Zorro. Each must have had maybe ten half our segments, and my recollection is that each episode was within the one hour show, and It started off with the theme song for that particular hero. Something like: The trail was long, and the desert hot, they grew afeared but he did not, We're sure that you won't forget the thrilling saga of Andy Burnett. Andy's on the move. Andy won't rest, Andy Burnett is a travellin' west.
