Got a tractor torn all apart and getting ready to start puttihg some things back together after replacing seals etc. Was hoping for ideas to clean and reuse gaskets that survied in decent shape, not talking head gasket here but say govenor gaskets, seal or bearing retainers etc (I am looking at the old intake exhaust gasket) or is it wiser to cut all new outa gasket material or cardboard. $$ are a factor but got a lota time invested too. Going to paint the old girl and hoping to be leak free when done. Thanks Rocko.

I would use new.
Gasket material isn't that expensive, and would sure help save your new paint.

You didn't say what the 'old girl' was, but if its a common make, there probably is a fairly reasonably priced gasket set for it.

It'd be a shame to cut corners and end up with a bunch of leaks spoiling a new paint job. When I was doing that, I would do the best job possible on the repairs, and then if it was months or even years before there was money to paint it, so be it. (And its fun to work one that runs well that you don't mind getting scratched.)

Unless this is some rare hard to find parts for tractor I have to ask, you have money for paint but you don't have any for gaskets?

If new gaskets are not available, then as mentioned already, use new gasket material if at all possible. AND note the thickness as there are applications where the thickness of a gasket is important, although not likely on an old tractor. I have on occasion re-used a gasket but I would apply a small bead of RTV gasket maker on each side to assure a good seal. Just my nickles worth.

Have you checked the price of a full gasket set? You may be surprised at how cheap they are.

I wouldn't worry too much about re-using if you have to. As long as they're in good shape, and as long as it's not in a high pressure system of some sort.

The worst thing they can do is leak a little. That's obviously not an ideal situation, but if you're real low on funds - it's not the end of the world either. But I think you'll find that they work just fine.
