A little local good news

I went to town this morning and got a hair cut. There were signs in the window of the tire store that been closed for several months saying they were reopening in January. I asked the barber who was opening it. He said it was my next door neighbor's grandson.

It's been a royal pain to have to drive a half hour each direction just to get a tire fixed. First new business to open up around here in quite some time.

USE them, and SUPPORT them OFTEN even if they are a little higher than 'online',Walmart, etc,Lest they suffer the same fate as the last....

And remember its not the "olden days" anymore. Getting tires fixed, mounted balanced and whatev er is not going to cost $3.50 or $5.00. Don't muzzle the ox that threshes the grain. We lost our local tire shop a couple years ago. I know what a pain it is. And he was reasonable gobble

DeltaRed, you are so correct! Many "online" orders charge an extra shipping charge so you don't really save that much. And I have bought two sets of tires from Walmart, my first and last! About five years ago I was in Walmart one day and just happened to look at their tire prices. Hmmm. not bad, think I will purchase a set, several dollars less than what I been paying. So, OK, they hand me the bill and tires-xx amount, valve stems-xx each, balancing-xx per tire. I actually saved less than $5.00 per tire over what I would have payed my local dealer because when he quotes me a price that INCLUDES mounting, balancing, new valve stem and disposal fee for the old tires. That is why I have been doing business mainly with him for almost 35 years.

A couple FORD car and truck dealers around here advertise on the radio, that their prices on tires can't be beat. On the same radio station there are at least three more regional tire distributers with multiple locations here in Central NY. saying the same, plus two Farm Tire service guys who are advertising the same thing. It sounds like a cut -throat business to me! I don't know who has the best VALUE, its been a couple of years since I've bought any tires.

Couple of years ago I was in the market for new tires. I stopped at the closest place and got a quote. Then I saw the same tire in a Fleet Farm store a lot cheaper. I wanted to say something to the local place so waited to buy tires. Good thing I did. The quote I got included, mount, balance, new valve stems and disposal. The guy didn't tell me that when I ask about price. He was like "oh that's right you haven't gotten tires from us before". Local place was 2.50 a tire cheaper than Fleet Farm when everything was said and done. Guess where I got my last set of tires from?

You're right there I have a great tire guy near me,one man operation he'll fix farm implement tires and just about anything else.I buy all my car and light truck tires from him he might be a little higher than some of the big places but they won't fix a baler tire so I'm trying to help keep him in business. He seems pretty busy most of the time so thats good.

I use two local guys, both about the same distance away. Both stand behind what they sell and fix whatever I bring to them. I'm not even looking anyplace else.

rrlund,
I understand what you are saying about distance and time, but tires vary a great deal in tread depth, composition of the rubber, and traction. The point I was making was that cheapest is usually not the best value, but many people buy based on price, thus making the tire business cut throat, and at least around here there is a tire dealer on every corner, saying they have the best prices. I sure hope this guy makes a go if it, for your and your neighbors sake.
