I need to replace my washer and drier, local True Value sells Maytag, someone else had a slightly used Amana set. The old washer was a Whirlpool bought new in 1988. Transmission went out. What brand is giving good service?

Whirlpool seems to be the best now. They own Maytag, but it is now their lower quality line. I can't remember who bought Amana washers; Whirlpool might own that too.

We have a Maytag dryer that's 14 years old and a Sears front loading washer probably made by Whirlpool and it's 4 years old. We sold the Maytag washer. Hal

Could do a search for 'washing machine reviews'; I'm not sure that there's a quality set out there.....we live in a throw-away society. Our first set....Kenmore, iirc....lasted almost 30 years, with nary a problem. They were still working, but kinda dated/beat up, so when we added on to the house, swmbo wanted new ones. Bought Amana......mostly cause they were stainless and my work clothes wouldn't beat 'em up. They lasted less than 5 years........total junk. Maytag usta be considered the 'cadillac' of machines, at least around 'here', so that's what we have now. In 6 years, I've had the washing machine apart twice my-own-self and have had the repairman out once. No problems with the dryer........yet.

I really think they are all made in the same factory anymore. They just get different brand names applied at the end of the assembly line. Probably the best one out there will be the one with the fewest doo-dads and gadgets.

A friend of mine owns an appliance store, and sells almost all of the brands. I still buy from him, and usually at price. But he has told me that the Sears Kenmores' are about as hard to beat as any. Most of the Sears stuff is rebranded Whirlpool, and the worst problem with them is that folks call Sears for service and are disappointed at the machine rather than the dealer. Yet he also repairs the Sears as fast as the Whirlpool in the store, and the parts are the same.

My brothers have all owned maytag and have had continuous problems.

In fairness to maytag, I'm not sure if it's the brand, or if all fancy new washers/driers have trouble.

I stick to machines that have a knob and and on off switch.

What seems to always break down for them is usually circuit boards and switch panels - stuff that you can't fix cheaply.

So my only recommendation is to stay away from the fancy stuff.

Does ANYBODY actually USE any of those extra features???

My clothes always come out clean from the washer, and dry from the drier.

I'm not sure what I'm missing. But I've had the same washer and drier for longer than I can remember.

Between two washers, a 'fridge and a deep freeze, I could give you an hour of ranting about how bad Maytag is. Not only that, but our local dealer weaseled out of the factory Maytag warranty. I wouldn't use another new Maytag if it was given to us. Avoid at all costs.

Amana, Whirlpool and Maytag are all the same madde by the same company. I usually buy the most reasonable off brand (Estate I believe) and get great service from them. Big names mean bigger repair costs and are just more eye appealing

If you can afford 'em, and you want the absolute best there is on the market today, get Bosch brand appliances. They combine modern technology with the quality and durability of the old school world. Just brace yourself when they tell you the price!

We've always had great luck with the Sears Kenmore brand. Not just washers---our refrigerator was bought in 1982. Wife has been wanting it to quit for years, but it keeps on ticking. Microwave was bought in 1983. A deep freeze out on the back porch was bought in the early 70s.

For what it's worth, the wife of a friend of mine told me just last night that she's replacing her big fancy front-loading washer. She said that it's designed to not use much water, and as a result the clothes don't get as clean as they should. Me, I don't know.

Doug,
I've been a fan of Whirlpool's for decades. I have one I bought used on 1978 when I purchased my house. It's been my goal to keep it going as long as I can. Many timer rebuilds, belts, water vales, motor, and heater tubes on dryer. I thing the heater tubes on the dryer is the best design, safest. It's also the easiest to replace.

That said, I recently purchased a new Whirlpool washer and dryer for my country home. Thought getting the newer fancy washer would be a good idea, wrong.

Not impressed with how clean things get. Wouldn't buy the more expensive Whirlpool. Next time, I will look to see if Whirlpool still makes the better, simpler, washer like days of old.

I still have my old Whirlpool and another old Whirlpool set in the basement of my country home. Like the old washers, not the new one.

Not a lot of difference in the new dryer design, it's a good one.

I'm waiting on parts to get here now to fix my 3-1/2 year old Kenmore washer. That's $337 dollars worth of parts this time (after $205 worth of parts 6 months earlier) to fix a $500 washer. This will be the last time I fix this piece of junk. This will be the last time I fix ANY Sears Kenmore appliance. They're capitalizing on a reputation that died long ago.

I talked to a local dealer, he said the new Maytags, Whirlpools aren't what they used to be, he sells them but reccomended Speed Queen for a farm duty washer, I have been told by many that the ones without an agitator don't clean as good, I don't need all of the fancy features , I want to wash clothes not take it to the moon!

This does not answer your question but I can tell you for sure to stay away from anything made by Kitchen aid. We dropped a load of money going with kitchen aid stuff when we build our house in 07. At this time it has all failed and been replaced.

We bought a Frigidaire for the new house in 2002.Replaced it in 2006 with another Frigidaire.Replaced that one this year with a Speed Queen. The salesman used the term farmers wash machine.Cheaper than a front loader and does a good job.

My wife says what about the front loaders.Salesman says not if you want clean clothes. The agitator makes the difference.

I can't get Photo Bucket to work but I'll post a picture later of what my 91 year old mother still uses.Everybody will get a chuckle.

The new top loading washers don't have an agitator. We bought our first front loader in 1955 made by Bendix and have had a front loader ever since. No problem getting the clothes clean. Even my work clothes were filthy and they came out clean. That's from crawling up inside an Army Tank to install instrumentation
on the engine and transmission. Hal

We"ve had good luck with Frigidaire.Got 10 years out of our last washer and the drier is still going strong. My mother got the same set as us a year later and hers are still fine.I was impressed with the washer and drier enough to get a Frigidaire dishwasher. It has to be 8 years old and the 3 before it lasted 2 years each. When a bearing went out of the washer I was ready to get another Frigidaire front loader but the store I always deal at but they had a deal on factory reconditioned LGs.

My new whirlpool has an agitator. Just don't think it is as good as the older one. I would buy another whirlpool, but it would have to be the cheaper one with fewer bells. My new one measures the amount of water, has a crazy way to make the agitator work. Don't like it at all.

Built a new house 4 years ago and was told the Bosh was the way to go. Washer.dryer & dish washer. Big mistake, paid twice as much and have had nothing but trouble. Finally gave up and replaced the dishwasher and about to give up on the washer.. NOT WORTH THE COST AT ALL

I usually don't reply much to this stuff but i guess I'll give my 2 cents in on this.

as a Sears repair tech for the last 7 yrs and specializing in laundry products i will tell you this

Ge: same machine that's been made for the last 50 yrs but is all computerized now. they have electronic trans and computer controlled motor. more or less a 2 yr machine.

Frigidaire: same as GE but worse. they have many issues in washer and dryers.

Whirlpool/Maytag/Jennaire/kitchen aid: all made by the same company, used to be the best machine on the market, i mean they made Sears for 30 yrs. now, well there made almost all in Mexico and assembled here. they only make the low end washer and dryers for Sears Kenmore. we typically rebuild there washers within a year of owning them. they have really gone down hill in the last 3 yrs.

bosh: high dollar, not many issues but we don't see many of them either.

Samsung: all a Samsung is, is a rebuilt redesigned Maytag. they redesigned the Maytag that put Maytag out of business and have had good success. probably the number 2 machine on the market. and they do have some ties to the whirlpool dryers now.

LG: The number one machine on the market hands down, they have less problems then most all company, when they do have a issue there fast to fix it and get the issues dissolved, easy to work on and cheap to fix. They also make all the high end Kenmore's that sears sells.

One nice thing of my job is sears sells every brand and we have to be able to work on everything.

Well there my 2 cents take it how u want it.

Magic Chef top loader 22 years old. Had a new front load high dollar Frigidaire in the house in town that wouldn't wash girls clothes clean much less farm duds. That old Majic Chef does a heckuva job yet! Couple months ago lookin at TVs and looked at new top loaders, all had a agitator! Let the Frigidaire go with the house when we sold it.

If you care about operating cost get a front loader. They typically use 1/3 the water of a top loader. There is no such thing as a commercial or Industrial top loader because of the water consumption.

Speaking as a retired locomotive mechanic..there
are just 2 brands of American Locomotives.
Electromotive, formerly the Electro-Motive
division of General motors, now a division of
Caterpiller, but still uses a 4000 horsepower 2 cycle "Detroit Diesel" engine. General Electric
build a "Cooper-Bessemer" 4 cycle engine,
under license. Modern Locomotives have air
conditioning, flush toilets, and refrigerators.
I have seen brand new GE locomotives, fresh from
the factory, and the refrigerators have failed!
I wouldn't buy anything from GE!

MF POOR, Your right about living off the rep part but the old stuff great. We bought a Sears Best microwave in 1966, thru it out in the junk pile about 20 years later and bought one with turntable. It went bad about 2 years later and went to the shed and retrieved the old Sears and are using it to this day. The noise does not bother now, my hearing got worse.LOL
