seating an oil seal

Replacing the oil seal for the input shaft on a Farmall A. The cast alum. housing is apparently slightly out of round. Can see a little light between the seal and the housing. I put a coat of gasket maker on the housing face to hold the seal and to keep the oil in. Is this gonna work or am I just wasting time?

The best thing I've found for seals is the Green Loctite. It's considered a retaining compound and has good gap filling capabilities along with enough holding power to positively keep the seal from spinning in the housing, something gasket sealer typically doesn't have.

You can also use Caterpillar Green Adhesive . Only problem with CAT Green is once it sets, whatever it's on is there permanently. You either grind it out or remove it with a cutting torch.

I would also suggest green Loctite. #609 would work but #603 might resist the oil better. It's good for gaps up to .005".
