Farmall M Govenor

I have 1940 Farmall M that starts easy, but if you throttle up or down too fast it kills the engine. It idles fine at different speeds, but if you move the tractor even in a low gear it will kill the engine. It seems like the engine has almost no power. I think it might be running real rich. Is the problem in the carb or the govenor?

So if you choke it does it hurt or help??? If it hurts check your air cleaner and make sure it is not clogged up. If it help then good chance the carb is set to leans so you need to open up the main jet a little at a time till you find the sweat spot

Before you do any tune-up or adjusting, check your compression. This is the first step in any tune up. Carburetors get blamed for so many problems. How old is the gas in the tank? See that your mechanical advance is working by removing the distributor cap and slightly try turning the rotor by hand one way or the other, if it moves see if it springs back. If not it is froze up and most likely causing your problem. After 30+ yrs of working as a mechanic and listening to other good mechanics has paid of for me more than once. I hope this helps and let us know what you find.

ou can't actually set the M too rich.........if you read the manual, it states to run the adjuster full out for normal operation and to adjust it in for economy when doing light work.

Provided of course that someone, in an attempt to get more power, drilled out the holes in the main metering stem, or drilled out the main metering jet. If either of those have been done, then yes, you can get an M to run way too rich.
