Case partial power shift ???? And plow question?

So a friend of my grandpa asked me to plow an old pasture when the ground dries up. I told him I would but offered him my plow an Oliver 4-16 and he said that he was worried about his 970 case having power and even if it could pull it he thought the power shift was best for light duty, so we made deal and I'm gonna plow with my Oliver 1850 and 4-16 in the spring but his 970 is completely restored every thing is new , tires, paint, all pumps and valves, every thing it is darn near perfect mechanicall and cosmetically. it looks new. Maybe he just doesn't want to get it dirty . But I thought the 970 was similar to my olie?

I pull 5-16" easy with my 970's, as to light duty use I think you are right he doesn't want to get her dirty, 970's are a very strong 85hp cnt

He has nothing to worry about, other than getting it dirty. The 970s were produced from 1969 until 1978 when the 90 series took their place. The Range Powershift (RPS34) was one of the best tranies produced at the time. The 970s were certified at 86 to 93 PTO HP depending on when produced. The 9's big brother the 1070 used the identical tranny and was rated at 108 PTO HP. We as dealers turboed many 9s and 10s with no perticular adverse affects, as long as the operator didn't over weight and over tire them afterwards. A turboed 970 would push 142 HP. We typically sold 970s with 5x16 plows here in hilley Central NY.

Just a thought, maybe he knows something about his trans being ????.I know in our area,I sure wouldn't want to have to work on one,all the dealers I know of are IH or CIH dealers and don't have anyone capable of even looking at one.My 970-8speed is pushing 200 or better, but it is used carefully even tho it wts.15000# and only burns 1/2-2/3 the fuel it did before doing the same job.

we had both and they were pretty even in power and fuel economy but the case has much better hydraulics, i'm not sure it's even worthy of being called hydraulics on an Oliver, light duty? yeah ok, operated properly and maintained a Case ps trans is not a bad set up, Dad's 970 never hardly gave a bit of trouble, he pulled a 10' chisel, 4 bottom plow, 16' digger and a 15'disk for over 20 years, I don't like shifting them under load but will if needed, I try to get it in a gear and leave it there, I currently have a 1070, 1570 and a 2590.

If they don't have anyone that can work on a Case ps then they aren't much of a dealer. I have worked on them and they aren't that difficult.

Hi
I think the problem is the guys that worked on them when they where new either passed on, or got wise and quit/retired.
Im 38 and will work on older non computer stuff. Half the guys in our local dealers are 21 and cant tell a motors running rough because the air filters plugged,if the computer doesn't show a code for it.
If the dealer did know i would go to a private guy that new how, A dealer power shift re build round here if they do it is $8000 plus. The tractors worth $4000 on a good day.
Regards Robert

Too put it simply,NO Case dealers survived and a lot of the IH dealers quit at the merger.80 to 90%of red farmers went JD green. We have a old(1925)CIH dealer close and a former Case dealer(100Mi)to help with parts, but as far as service-help the Case dealer is the only help. These new dealers(JD Agco CIH)don't have the old people anymore and aren't training the new ones on these older things, like the other poster below said.

If the tractor was TRULY "gone through" and everything is in tip-top shape, then it is just irrational fear.

People get uptight like that around the TA on an IH tractor too. They put a brand new TA in the tractor, then never want to work it again for fear that they're going to "wreck" the TA "again."

That Case 970 is 30+ years old. It's certainly plowed a few thousand acres in its lifetime. If plowing a few more breaks the powershift, it was wore out from 30+ years of use. You finished it off, but the damage was already done.

A fresh unit should last just as long as the original unit, doing the same work as the original unit. Since the tractor will hardly do any work at all, the new unit should outlive you and your grandchildren.
