O.T. 1994 Ram 1500 starting problem

This truck has 165K on it and I have no reason to believe that the starter is not original equipment. Lately when I turn the key, every now and then nothing happens. When I try it again, it acts normal. When it malfunctions, there is no noise like the solenoid is trying. This morning was a lot colder than when I tried it last. It took 4 tries before it engaged and started like normal. Any ideas or similar experiences to look for. I know an intermittent problem is difficult to fix. The two thoughts that I had were the switch or the solenoid if it has one, on the starter.
Thanks, Roy

i'd look at the ignition switch first. get under the dash with a test light and see if you will loose power on the start circuit at the switch. if you have a big ring full of keys hanging on the ignition, the constant tugging will wear the switches out.

Turn the key, and when nothing happens have someone lightly tap on the starter housing with a ball pien hammer while you hold the switch in the crank position. If it starts, get a starter. If the solenoid clicks it's not the control side of the system. Gerard

Had similar problem on my 1999 ram 1500. Check under hood main connection block near or in main fuse box. I think you just pull it up or unscrew cant remember but clean the connections with brush and air (i think they are aluminum) i did this 3 or 4 years ago and havent had the problem since.
Hope this helps
Chuck

Last night when I started it to go home, I did hear a click under the hood somewhere. I am guessing it is the starter solenoid. I suppose it could be burnt contacts or a sticky bendix. I will check other suggestions as time permits.
Thanks, Roy

I took the starter off around
new years. I disassembled it except for the motor itself. I cleaned all the parts added a little lightweight lube and put it back together. So far it has not acted up. I have started it up about a dozen times, and yesterday was in the low teens. Usually we have colder weather and if it gets cold, I will try it then.

About the only thing that ever goes wrong with those starters is the contacts in the solenoid, they are easy to replace and the starter will work as new.
