Going to look at an IH backhoe 1967 with my BiL He knows less than nothing about it and I know almost nothing about them. I did have a JD hoe 15 years ago. What should we look for? I do know he will buy the donuts and coffee

Steering and swing unit. Everything else is repairable without a lot of expense..Looks like a 3444. They are a good dependable, strong machine.

The good is that is close to scrap price and it looks ok. I have been an ih guy all my life but realize that hoe is what we call an orphan . There is not much support for ih construction after case bought ih out. Anything along the line of the tractor it is built around can probably be bought but other things specific to the loader and backhoe might be harder to get. I am sure someone could find cylinder seals but things like pump drives ect might pose a problem. Would rather have a 30 year old case but they will probably be priced higher. Go for it can,t loose but 4 grand.. LOL

I have a 1970 2500 its been a good hoe. I agree with both JM. Carogator. If you are going to just use it occasionally on the farm as I do it will be a good machine. Never had problems finding parts. If you get it make sure to get all the manuals also most important is the parts book. My IH dealer does not have part numbers for my hoe but if I give him the number he can order the parts I need. I've got two of them. Totally different then any Deere. Many of the IHs have British engines gas and diesel. Tune up parts from various cars like MGs fit. I have two 3414s and they are based on the B-414 farm tractors.

Oddest part is the hydraulics for the backhoe. Stabilizers and swing are powered by the power steering pump. The rest of the hoe is powered by its own front mounted Cessna gear pump.

Parts are easy to get except for swing-parts on the rack-and-pinion hoe.

New old-stock IH parts come from Komatsu and are amazingly expensive.

Intresting what you say LJD, Iwould think the stabalisers and boom move by a diffrent pump to the rest of the backhoe so the machine can be mooved if the main backhoe hydraulics fail. MJ

We had a 3444, which is what that looks like. The weakness is obvious. Look at the top of the swing post. The splines where the block holds it wear off on one side. We drilled and pinned ours. That was the only major issue.
I think the idea with combining the power steering pump flow into the hoe valve was just that- it increased capacity a little.
