Bad luck and good luck

Two nights ago, wife and I were watching reality tv.
'The Waltons'. Heard something strange about 9:30 and went to the kitchen to find a finger sized stream of water pouring out the ice maker. Ice maker switch was off. Closed the water valve and got the floor dry.
Then realized how lucky we were that it happened while we were still up. In the middle of the night, it would have ruined all the wood floors in the front of the house.

mine was good luck, built my house in 95,..in 2008 i put in a new shower stall, after all was hooked up i turned the water on and had a slow drip in one of my old fittings, when i went to work on it i found that i had dry fit the plastic pipe and had never taken it apart to glue it,....never leaked a drop in 13 years...

Those built-in ice makers and their water supply lines are disaster. After mine burst a few years ago and made a mess, I shut it off started to make ice cubes in the trays again. Haven't had a flood since.

When we moved into our new house 2 years ago, I installed the reverse osmosis before Lowe's delivered the new refrigerator. The low pressure RO supply tank is hooked to the ice maker; I would NEVER use full system water pressure for the ice maker - just too much opportunity for a leak with high pressure.

RO only uses about 7 psi, which should never cause a leak - and the ice cubes taste better when made with water from the RO. The RO also removes the chlorine from the water; health experts just stated recently that chlorine can damage your health.

I had a 3/4 inch water line blow under the kitchen one morning. I wasn't in the house, but luckily one of the boys was. It was spraying straight up on the sub floor under the hardwood floor. If we'd have been on vacation for a week or something,we'd have been as well off to bulldoze the whole house after that.

Baught a new Samsung refer for the new house. It has some sort of meter that only allows so much water to run to the ice maker and/or cold water despencer and it will shut off. Less than 10 cups as I tried to fill the coffee pot and had to cycle twice to fill it.

Walked in the house from a 4 day vacation to the sound of running watter a few years back. Icemaker had stuck on. Running water out the door of the freezer. Some treat to come home to! Now we alwasy shut the water off if we are going to be gone any extended period of time!

I've got over 200 head of cattle around here drinking all the time though. Don't have that luxury.

The wife read one time in a magazine to replace the hoses on the clothes washer every 5 yrs. We looked and sure enough the hot water hose had a large bubble on it. But never thought of the ice maker or dish washer.

Hot water line to washing machine blew out several years ago at mother in laws house. Had run for several days before someone saw water running out the back of the house. She had just moved in to assisted living. Insurance sent in a crew and pulled up flooring and replaced everything.
Only cost us $250.
I use stainless braided hose on everything now.

A guy I work with had a new house built then went on vacation for a week. Pipe broke upstairs and water ran for days. Over $80,000 in damages!

A good friend of mine installed an on-demand propane hot water heater in the bathroom in his cabin. Was gone for weeks, and when he went back, the water line had sprung a leak AFTER the heater. It pumped out hot water all over the floor until 250 gallons of propane was gone, then cold water after that. It ruined all the floors in his place.

I have noticed that a lot of people get home monitoring systems to prevent these problems. I have budgeted for one for my church that will monitor electricity, temperature, noise and water, and call me and/or three others in case of a problem. This system is about $385.00
