Seat clip 8N

Buying a flip seat for an 8N. The 3" replacement clips that hold the seat to the spring do not fit the new replacement 2 3/8" springs. Is the clip really necessary for the seat to be secure and work properly?

NO. The clip on my 8N has been broken for 30 years does no affect operation of the tractor

Not really.
The seat will rattle if the tractor is running an no one is setting on it.
Probably the worst that would happen is if you trailer it somewhere.
The wind could catch the seat and flip it up ripping it off.
Of course, that could probably happen with the spring too.
