460 TA sun gears

When welding the sun gears ( iwant to eliminate the TA) do you weld them to the shafts in the center of the carier?

You will need a power flow chart.

I'm not sure you would want to weld any gears.
Why do you want to eliminate the TA?

Maybe the IH guys will set me straight but would it not be better to set the tractor up as though it had a delete from the factory. Maybe something that could be found in a tractor parts yard. I assume you are trying to get around the expense of rebuilding what is in your tractor?

He wants to weld them to eleminate the TA which apparently is not working. He didn't say that or which range is not working if that is the case. I would strongly advise unhooking the linkage between ta and clutch and then see if tractor will roll back when going up an incline and pushing clutch down. If it does freely roll he will not have a problem but if it does not roll back freely he will be fighting getting it out of gear with a welded solid TA. Then the things is, those planetery gears and sun gears are the expensive parts in that unit and a shame to ruin them if servicable.

Welding the gears won't fix the difficult shifting. It will make shifting impossible.

The reason it's not shifting is because your linkages are not adjusted correctly, to release the TA clutch when you push the pedal.

If it shifts hard, that means your TA is ok, just out of adjustment.

But he doesn't say what the problem is. Might be
high side is out and he figures by welding them he
will just use high, and of course then the shifting
problems will appear unless ramp and rollers are
completely shot.

Correct, The TA is not working. Also, it will not roll backwards on an incline. To solve that I was thinking about removing the rollers from the over running clutch. I do not use the TA and with hired help using the tractor I want to just eliminate the TA

I don't use it, and with hired help using the tractor it would end up being abused, broken,or freewheeling accident.

I really do not know short of looking it up on an online parts book. I am guessing it would be the same as 400, 300 series tractors. Maybe one of the experts here will chime in. I would call places such as Bate's or Leahman's.

Unless something is wrong inside, the reason you cannot freewheel backwards is a simple linkage adjustment, you should be able to google some instructions online. If your worried about people mis-using it, then just remove the lever with it in High. IMO if you take that tractor with a good t/a and make it a bad t/a you just cut the value of the tractor in half. I have 460 that we use to handle hay wagons around the barn and I love having that t/a for when you want to get a nice slow reverse.

Have found them with the rollers, pins and springs removed and then they just drilled the t/a clutch plate and carrier and bolted the two together. Saw them welded several ways, some right in the tractor. What a mess.

It's your tractor, do what you want.

Keep in mind that a simple linkage adjustment is a whole lot easier than tearing the tractor down into 3 major pieces to get at the TA internals.

If you're afraid of someone abusing it, take the lever off and put it somewhere safe so when you sell the tractor you can include it.
