2006 Chevy up lander has check engine light on. Was diagnosed as evap code. Possible fuel cap. Replaced cap,but don't know how to reset the codes. Any suggestion? Thank for any info

if the computer accepts the change then the code will disappear after a certain amount of restarts for the computer system

Some vehicles, even removing battery cables, shorting positive to ground won't cause a reset. If yours is one, you'll have to get someone with a scan tool to do it. Not a very complicated process even with a cheap one. Available at most auto stores, many department stores, eBay, etc. Cost is approximately $50 on up. Some codes will reset themselves with several start drive cycles. Have that code fairly often with my GM car(s). Often resets before I can get to the scantool. We have found the cause is usually a small matchbox sized solonoid dump valve back near the fuel tank. Either take it apart, clean up, spray down with WD40, wash the foam filter and reassemble, or replace with new for less than $20. I have a cheapy scan tool, find it very handy, codes always come up at the most inopportune times, and at least I can check if the code is something I can deal with later or if it is an INSTANT PANIC! Googling your scan code and model car often will lead you to some ideas of the severity of the problem.

That worked on the wife's Ford Explorer a week ago. The check engine light had been on for a couple of years. The battery went completely to heck,so I took it out last Sunday afternoon. Got a new one Monday morning, put it in and the light hasn't come on since.

My 2005 2500 had the same problem, changing the gas cap did not help. There is a solenoid valve mounted next to the fuel tank that controls the system, they go bad and split. Do a search on the internet and you will find a less expensive option from an older Suburban than the standard valve.

Most codes will leave the light off after the third restart without a failure. The code will be kept in long term memory until cleared with a scan tool. That means that you can repair the problem and the light will remain on until the third start after the problem is repaired.

Had a Dorf truck at work that used to get a 'Check Engine' light that came on all the time. Kept turning it into the mechanic, because I had to keep getting out, lift the hood and see if the engine was still there. Then one day, it magically went out. And stayed off. A few weeks later, I got a night call out, and noticed a red glow in the corner of the odometer bezel. Looking at it closely, the mechanic had put a piece of black electrical tape over the little icon so it didn't show up.......

Thanks for all the info. I think I will disconnect the battery first and try that. If that don't work, I'll go from there
