OT snowmobile engine

Thinking of using an early or late '90s Polaris 440 fan cooled engine on a project. Anybody have experience with these engines, or recommend a better one? Sorry not tractor related.

What kind of project? In the summer a sled engine might overheat. Also what RPM do you need? Sled engines rev a lot higher than 3600 RPM.

Project's a secret. Actually replacing an older 440 points ignition engine with a newer CDI. Turns about 6000 rpm. Looking mainly for reliability, not max horsepower.

Polaris has made sleds for a long time. Probably best to check with a dealer that's been around for a while about a specific engine.

Best crossover snowmobile engine is the rotax used in ski-doo's. They can be installed on ultralight airplanes and do a good job.

The Polaris 440 fan cooled engine is a good reliable engine. I would have no reservations using it. Just make sure the fan belt is in good shape or replace it. As others have said, it was designed to be run in cold temps. That being said, there are snowmobile grass drag races held all summer long. You might want to run a little heavier on the oil mix to start with if you're running in temps over 40 degrees.

I have a 96 Polaris indy 440--great great engine and have had no problems with it--it winds up much quicker than my newer Polaris sleds.

Extra oil makes the engine run leaner and reduces the octane of the fuel. Both make the engine more prone to detonation.
Run 50:1 synthetic and 94 octane pump gas in the summer.

I repowered a old Deere sled with a Rotex

A fella asked me about using a snomobile engine
for woodsplitter power...but power is developed at very high RPM..too fast for most hydraulic
pumps..not practical.

Depends. The 485 in my sled is a low rpm torquer that engages the clutch at 2800rpm and redlined under 7000rpm.
Largest hurdle is the lack of a governor.
Given the low price of the 13HP Honda knock off motors. It would be cheaper and quieter than adding a governor to the sled engine.
