How can a person repair splines on a spindel they are wore out and its loose. Think a machine shop could build them up ans recut? It had shims in them but they fell down the shaft and I could not steer it.I got it all apart

Are you talking about the splines where the steering wheel mounts?
What kind of tractor?
You may be able to put a key way in it and/or a set screw through the side.

I usually drill two 1/4 holes down about an inch. One on each side of the splines and then drive a 1/4 inch dowel into each hole. Weld a bead around the top to hold the dowels in and you are good to go.

Is it tapered at all? If it is,a new steering wheel might make a difference. Half the wear might be in that. Of course if you never wanted it off again,JB Weld would tighten it up. Put it on the shaft, then put the wheel back on and tighten it up. Let it set a few days.

A shim may be possible using light sheet metal like a tin can and fitting it to the shaft, forcing wheel over it. Or drill a hole cross ways through the hub and shaft and put a slightly tight roll pin through it.

An old pop can strip could maybe work for a shim they are thin and soft just mite work. I shimed a hy shaft on a Cub with a piece and it worked just fine. Devcon makes a paste that will harden it too could work so does Loctite have a material that would harden and work.

OH,OK. I'd just try to build them up on the outside a little with the arc welder then smooth them back down best I could with the angle grinder.

Try cutting 2 slots, in the female shaft, 180 degrees apart, with a whizzer wheel die grinder, and put a coupla hose clamps around the female shaft, to draw it tight.

Whoops, read it wrong. Could still be done, the way I mentioned, though. Just weld a fine thread nut on one side of the slot, and a nut big enough to allow the bolt to turn, on the other side, of the cut. Only make one cut, on spindle arm, and not at all if it's cast iron!
