type of steel for loader pins

I have a JD 148 loader where the bucket pins on with 1 1/8" pins. I need to get some new pins for a hay spear attachment, and don't want to pay $40 apiece at the dealer.
What kind of steel bar stock would be good? Is 1018 ok?

thanks

It sounds like you switch it often so just buy hitch pins of the right size for your needs. They are heat treated and have a handle and pin hole already in them. Here is a link to them at Shoups. The 1 1/8 pin is $10.20 each.
1 1/8 pin at Shoups.

I have and do just use roll stock in the correct diameter and it works just fine. As a matter of fact I have one pin in a loader which it a simple piece of pipe. Lost that pin and needed the loader and all I had on hand was that pipe and it has been there at least 15 year if not more

Dan,
JD has the answer, for sure the easiest and quickest. I turned all new pins for my excavator and used 11L44 aka Stressproof. At a little under 2.125 inches it took a long time. If you can find something off the shelf go for it.

Per your original question 1018 would work, would be a little on the soft and really doesnt harden as its low carbon. 4140 or 4340 would be much better. Ricks disclaimer: I am a hack machinist not a pro.

You need to buy preheat treated 4140 steel rod, in the 1.125" diameter. Go to Mcmaster carr's website and see.

I love this site.. Some folks just make simple things so difficult. Loader pins on a farm tractor. Old and Jd are both right about anything will work.. Anyway the guy got his answer. I think you could ask how to tune a piano on here and someone would know. I love to read the answers. Of course being 70+ years old means I have heard a bunch of the answers before..

I also use hyd cyl rod ...the chrome cuts down on friction...I also make the bellcrank rods from hyd rod and usually install 3 bearing if it uses bearings
