Auction Prices for Used Tires

Yesterday, I went to an auction in central Indiana. There was a set of “Huskee” brand, 11.2 x 38 rear tractor tires. These tires no better than 40%-50% of new tires and there were a few small cracks in the side walls.
New price for Firestone Field and Road tires of the same size is $850 a pair. So, to me, the top dollar value of the used “Huskee” tires was no more than $450. They sold for $625.
I don’t understand why anyone would pay 75% of the cost of new tires for ones that have no more than 50% use remaining. Are Huskee tires that much better than Firestone?
Are any of you seeing tire prices similar to these in other parts of the country?
Thanks,
Art

That is why I quit going to auction sales. When you could buy the JD hydraulic cylinder with hoses new for around a $100.00 and bidders would pay 75-90 for a used one.

Thats every auction I have ever gone to some things will go high and some things will sell cheap.Anyway Had they been run on the road and had sharp bars? If so they were worth more to a tractor puller than a new set especially if they were 'hardened' from age.

I don't think you are seeing the big picture. Those Huskee are not a 23* tire but more of a antique tractor style and that on a restored show tractor would look a lot better than the new Firestones. And under no way would I ever buy a Firestone tractor tire after the way the company treated us on new field and road tires that the sidewalls were junk in less than a year, would buy any other brand of china or otherwise imported tire before a Firestone. The old Firestone before they went to the field and road were good, feild and road NO good.

My wife's cousin just bought a set of new rear tires for his Farmall "M" and they cost him $1300 for the pair. Don't know the brand name. Tubes were only $20 each. The tires were stock size. I saw them laying by the barn.

Just like when they buy used draw pins that are usually bent for 5-6 bucks each, I can buy new red haven pins at farm fleet for 3-5 bucks

I"ve been to lots of sales this year...The tires either brought a fortune or sold cheap..Heres pictures of some of my good purchases this year..

Nice pair 18.4x34"s for $100
Nice pair 9.5x24"s on rims for $150
Nice 10x16 front tire for $10,now on my 1206

At one sale I bought a new 7.50x24 and a new 7.50x16 implement tires both on the rims for $125..Go on a 77 NH baler.

At a recent sale a friend bought (3) useable 14.9x36"s for $1.00,yes $1.00..At another sale I saw a pair of older barely used 12.4x38"s sell for $200 with some cracks...

At yet another sale I saw a pair of brand new 12.4x38"s sell for $800...There was a wagon load of older unused tires on this sale...

Yesterday I watched a poor pair of 18.4x34"s on rims sell for $350..

Guess I got a heck of a deal at the end of September then. I bought a pair of 14.9 28s,about 80-90% tread, not weathered, for $70. Cost me $187.50 to get the tire man out here and swap them out and reload them. The same consignment auction this spring,I bought a pair of 13.6 38 duals with one good tire for $25. I guess nobody else there was looking beyond the two rims and the one bad tire they had to drag home to get the prize.

Seems to make a huge difference around here who the auctioneer is. They all seem to have their own followers. Some followers must have deeper pockets than others.

Pretty much proves my theory and that is auctions are for selling...not buying. Buy private and sell auction. One could (and some do ) make a living that way.

I went to a sale about a month ago and got a new set of Firestone F&R's on new rims, 16.9-38 for $600. I also got a new set of 14.9-28 on new Ford spin out rims, for $325, and a pair of 10.00-16 four ribs on new rims for $150, also new. A set of the 13.6- 28 for my loader was priced at about $2k plus mounting. I'll mount them myself for what the local tire guy wants. With rims at over $200, I feel like this was a good deal...

I bet that you would be saying just the opposite if you had just got done selling off your life's accumulation

There will always be acceptions Im sure. I also don't think it's smart financially to liquidate ones nice collection at auction and flood a local market all at one time. You are limiting the available money pot to locals and a long distance bid will only bid accordingly to his shipping costs.

If you needed tires paying 75% is better than paying 100%. Most likely what that tire was going on will probably never wear out the used ones that went on it.

7 years ago I paid $200 for a set of 13.6 X 38s that were a little less than half tread at best. Way more expensive than what I wanted to spend at the time especially compared to new price just a few years earlier. Finally mounted them this summer (took me that long to find rims) and thought what a deal I had made. Sold one the horribly old dry rotted tires and rusted out rim (but still held air) for $150. Kept the "good tire" (paid $1 for it) and the rim I patched a few years ago even though the guy offered me $250 for it.

Saw an OLD set of 18.4x34 duals sell for $375 PER WHEEL.

Stupid auctioneer trick to make the ones not paying attention think they're getting both for that money.
