Ford V-10 shearing exhaust manifold bolts

Reading the other threads about the plugs got me thinking about the exhaust manifold bolts to. My v-10 has broke the heads off at total of 6 exhaust manifold bolts. It has 80K on it and is an 01. No problems with the plugs at this time. This truck is my light duty work horse. Pulling stock trailers, hauling hay, etc.The furthest I run it is 200 miles away but would hate to spit a plug or drop a manifold with animals in tow that far away from home. With the tight clearances removing the sheared bolts appears to be a PIA. Thinking of removing the engine and put it on the stand to do the exhaust and inserts for the plugs all at once. What do you guys think? I think I will make up the time I take pulling the engine with the easier access of having it on the stand.
 
once you get the wheel and inner fender out they really aren't that bad to get the manifold off and remove any broken studs. As for the plugs, if you haven't blown one out by now you are most likely ok. If you replace them, make sure you get them tight, if you leave them loose they will work out you will be putting inserts in, which isn't that big of a deal either, just more of a pain if its one of the rear cylinders. I guess everything is relative depending on your comfort level doing that kind of work.
 
Consensus on the web is an '01 has the improved heads so the plugs aren't as big of and issue as with the earlier engines. Major factor in not having the newer engines popping it's plugs out is to use better plugs and install them by the book in regards to torque, thread lubrication and engine temperature. Might want to get a manual, I know on some ford trucks the "approved" procedure is to loosen the cab from the frame and raise it up some to gain access. Poke around on some of the Ford forums and You-tube many issues have corrective measures from Ford or the aftermarket.

I've got a 03 5.4 F250. Have had a couple of the spark plug coils go bad. Ford mechanic ask if I had been washing the motor? Yes I had it detailed, and I told the guy to do it like I was selling it. He had power washed the engine and had forced water past the seals. Don't wash your engine. Mine had 160000 and has pulled a trailer at least 60000 of those. Thats is the only trouble I have had except a rusty brake line, good thing I was pulling the trailer for brakes. and once I stopped up the radiator with fescue seed and It wouldn't pull a load. The cylinders would start cutting out before the gauge showed hot. No exhaust trouble. Also I have a super chips programer in it, aw sum.Vic
 
My 5.4 had lost about half the exhaust studs. I 've left itand hasn't gotten any worse in the last 3 years. My brother in law said you can sometimes change them all out and they fail again in a year or two.
 
I would put new studs in easily accessible locations and put spring washers under some, and wave washers under some to see if the breakage could be mediated. Titanium bolts might also work. Jim
 
The one thing I found when I had a 2000 excursion was the manifolds were completely inadequate for towing. THEY ARE SUPER RESTRICTIVE,so to counter this I would let mine idle for about 5min to bring the manifold temp down. They expand and contract A LOT causing the bolts to break. I finally did the permanent fix by replacing with the GIBSON stainless headers. IT WAS EXPENSIVE TO DO but very worth it as I picked up 1.5-2 mpg all round and it ran completely different especially on the hills. I wish there was a cheap fix for yah.
