What kind of paperwork

When you buy or sell a used car or truck, you have the title to show proof of ownership.
But when you buy a tractor, especially a older one, what does everyone use? A bill of sale? If so, anything else required other than make, model and serial number?

i know a man who financed a new jd back in the late 90's and the bank wrote down the wrong serial number on the loan papers. later he defaulted on the loan, the bank came to claim the tractor but due to the wrong serial number could not take it.

We always prepare a bill of sale with the make, model, and serial number.

For what its worth, name of the seller with seller"s signature, seller"s mailing address, and phone number.

out here as far as legally you don't need anything, if your paying cash for an old tractor but if you financing a newer one there will be paperwork on the loan if the tractor is the collateral for the loan, with the serial number on the papers, that being said its always a good idea to make a bill of sale so you have some document proving ownership in case it gets stolen, and later recovered, also these days you may be asked for proof of ownership when transporting, either at ports of entry into another state or by a random traffic inspection by the law, there are a lot of thieves stealing tractors and farm equipment to sell for scrap, dot out here is interested in tractors being transported with no equipment attached to them, ie if its obviously on its way to a job and the truck is a frequently seen unit they dont bother much, but one being hauled by itself on non local plates their liable to stop the truck and inquire as to what your doing
