This is a dum question I know, but I was wondering if installing a steel rim with a pilot of 4.625" (4-5/8")on a hub with a pilot of 4.5 (4-1/2") would cause any problems or if the pilot is just there to help get rim lined up with the bolt holes? Thanks!
 
I don't think its a dumb question at all.
You will lose some strength doing that, and if the lug nuts come lose you will
cause more damage to the lug bolts and rim without the tight fit center.
That being said, I've seen it done many, many times.
 
There were a lot of insteances that when new there was no pilot for the wheel to set on. Seen it many a time but cannot give any examples. I have done it many a time.

I'll agree with that Leroy.
Late 30's Ford Trucks, Ford 9N and 2N tractors as examples.
I also think the reason they stopped doing it was for the reasons I stated above.
I have no proof of that, just what I've been told.

The one caution that I'd take though,is to make sure that the lug bolts or nuts are the tapered kind to take up any difference in the diameter of the holes vs the diameter of the bolts or studs.
 
I have an Oliver disk with no pilot 'step' on the hub.Uses a standard 6 bolt implement hub and common tapered bolts/nuts.
