power loss question on newer deere

Howdy,

Was using dad's 2010 5055E John Deere to bushhog some cornstalks today and started to have some issues. The tractor began to lose rpms (maybe 200-500 below pto speed) but would come back up to previous level and stay. I could go on for a bit and it would do it again and then again, more frequently. Finally it did this and the rpms fell down to a little lower level and the stack started blowing blue smoke. A drop back to engine idle at the shop cut the smoke out. I checked things over to see if anything obvious was wrong but nothing was. I ran it again and it worked fine. So I took it back to the field a bit more. It ran fine for a good bit and then did the same process over again. It's more newfangled than I'm used to (normally run two cylinder tractors) so I could use some ideas to check from. God bless.

When I was planting wheat in corn stalks (our corn was so bad we never shelled it) My 6060 AC would suck so many leaves onto the grill it would start to get hot. All I had to do was slow down on the end and let it idle and most of them would fall off. Does your tractor suck its engine air behind the grill? Maybe it isn"t getting enough air.

I had a 5425 that did that same thing, it had a computer controlled engine management system In the Powertek engine. Deere replaced the CPU under warranty on mine

Howdy,

Thanks for the input guys. My first thought was air and yes, the radiator is behind the front grill. I clear the grill from time to time but after this I popped the hood and found the radiator needed cleared too. I also checked the air filter, which wasn't bad. I ran it again after checking those and clearing the grill and radiator but it did it again. I'm leaning toward fuel like the others. I originally thought it might be bad fuel as it did this after I filled it up from a freshly filled diesel tank here on the farm but it didn't do it for a good while after fillup. Will do more with it today. Thanks for the input and God bless.

Howdy.

Did some looking this morning and found the issue. The lower fuel line on the tank has a fitting with a long mesh screen attached. The screen was completely covered with junk. The big question now is why is the fuel cap letting in the dust? The junk was a wet version of the junk all over the grill of the tractor. Dad may need a new fuel cap if this is the problem. Thansk for the help guys! God bless.

If I am not mistaken the 5055E is the same as the 5203. If you will check your fuel filter you will find it needs replacing also. I have a 5303 and run across this problem from time to time.

What happens is condensation form in the fuel tank and it is then sucked into the fuel lines and filters.

Don't suppose you have algae in the fuel?? All the algae I've seen was black looking.
