Ford 5000 gas engine overhaul cost?

How much will it cost me to overhaul my 1965 Ford 5000 tractor gas engine? I have a mechanic that will do it on the side for $30 per hour labor plus parts and he works at the local John Deere dealership. I have a little blow by but I"m loosing compression fast.

I agree with Dalet, neighbor had one with over 11,000 hours when the meter quit and only had a valve job at about 9,500, still run great, it was a gas job. They don't have sleeves so an overhaul costs BIG bucks.

Well you can figure a good $800 for the engine kit then say $250-700 to have the head done. So just in parts your looking at no less then $1500. Ya I maybe on the high side but better figure higher then lower.

A little blow by is normal YOu will never get an engnie to have a perfect seal on the rings.

Now when you say loosing compression fast is that start cold and then as it warms up the compression goes down? If so that may be a simple as a valve adjustment. AS the engine heats up and parts start expanding the valve clearance can diminish to the point that the valves are not fully seating.

I'd want to check on parts availablilty.... particularly pistons... before I got too deep into this. 4.2" gasoline pistons are or were at a point in time not available....
A modest amount of blowby is normal on those engines. I'd want to check the compression closely and see if it's the rings or valves that's losing on you. If it's just the valves... and it very well could be... do a valve job and leave the bottom alone.

Many factors come in to play. Could be 10-25 hours depending on how much needs to be done to do it right that is. Oh by the way the crank shaft should be checked and most likely turned down one size smaller plus new sleeves installed all of which is machine shop work

The 1964 models were the last to use sleves and then the 6000 I think also never had sleeves, they are ment to be bored with oversize pistons. I had a 4000 that they bored and refit an after market sleeve in.

I work on these blue fords on a daily basis, I have a 5610 I am rebuilding right now. Good luck finding 4.2 Gas pistons and rings.I have 3 very good engine parts suppliers and they don't have them. I disagree on doing the valve job and leaving the bottom alone. I have never done just a valve job that didn't drink oil after it was done. Fords don't have replaceable guides and you have to buy oversize valves, knurl the guides or have universal guides installed.
none of which is cheap. If you don't put a lot of hours on it leave it alone or trade tractors.

Compression test was good in all cylinders except for the rear one and the head gasket is bad back there. It looks like an easier fix than what I was thinking.
