Today my dad sold 6 bales of alfalfa for $60 to a hunter. My dad decided that if we're gonna sell any of our hay it was gonna be worth while. Said the guy balked a little but he still opened his wallet...

Prices here may be near that for top quality hay. Saw a craig's list ad asking $10, a week or so ago. This week, a friend got a load at the Clare auction for $4.50 - said other loads were higher, and some sold as high as $8.00. Thought himself lucky to get it for $4.50.

Guess maybe I'm gonna get the old IHC #45 out from under the barn overhang at those prices. Glad somebody is getting 'em!

think that"s bad? - I just brought my daughter into a Pet Smart store the other day - they sell these little tiny bales for anywhere between $18 and $25!!!!

I almost choked.

It"s not even a quarter of a bale in size.

It"s labled "Timothy Hay".

Yup, small squares. Not sure if it was 1st crop w/ rain, or 4th crop w/no rain. I was talking to Mom on the phone and she told me about it.

At the local auction: Hay Market (sold by the ton)
11/15/2012

High Quality 2nd. and 3rd. Crop 225 - 287.50

High Quality 1st. Crop 200 - 250

Low Quality Hay 100 - 170

Straw 117.50

I guess the $65/ton we paid this summer for 3 loads of bedding (we chopped) was a good price.

Went to a horse show with a friend and his daughter. the owner of the place said they are paying $8-10/bale for the horses they are boarding. Mid-Michigan.

My next investment should be a hay storage pole barn. I sold all three cuts out of the field for 3.50

[b:f1f967510b]Alfalfa[/b:f1f967510b] is always a lot more expensive than the grass hay that yous are comparing it to. I don't know if yous didn't read it right or what. A lot heaver and a lot more protein than the same size grass hay bale, too. 110 lbs. around here. $15.00-$20.00 per bale or more. $10.00 is cheap for a bale of [b:f1f967510b]Alfalfa[/b:f1f967510b].

I sub fenced my Grass Field for pasture, and bought 5500 bales of small Sq bales (60 ibs) $10.00. Damn lucky to find that. Our Irrigation water was called 47 different days this summer. Third time in 137 years.

Our bales are nowhere near 100 lbs. Maybe 40. That would be around $500/ton. And yes that is a very high price.

Is baiting deer legal in your state? If not, he got away cheap just by your dad not dropping a dime. When others come around, tell them the hay is 5 bucks, the rest is a tip for looking the other way.

That about 300 per ton which is about right for our area for anything better than beef cow hay. I sold 90 ton large rounds to a friend for 160 out of the field. He paid over 200 for large rounds delivered from Farson, Wyo

Honestly tony, i don't think it is. That said I'm not a hunter so I don't really care what they do as long as it's not on my land. They buy a lot of pumpkins from my brother too.
