Had one that looked like it would be like that, but turned out okay.
Back about a year before I retired I had to take a couple weeks off, had hurt my arm & doc pulled my medical card. Things healed up, got the "okie dokie" from the doc, headed to main office to turn in medical release. Problem is truck shop/yard is in a different part of city than main office, so rarely went to main office. Got there, parking lot empty, door locked. UPS had put an "attempt to deliver" tag on door. Grabbed the cell, "the number you have dialed is not in service". Didn't think to try the 800 number. Oh oh, boss went belly up, closed the doors. Hoot & scoot to shop to retrieve personal gear from truck. Shop wide open, normal activity. Asked what going on, foreman said "oh, they moved to new building over weekend".
Sure enough, big notice in driver's lounge, new address & map. Being about a mile from old office, crossed the boundary into a different area code, all new local numbers. After an hour of panic, too old to look for new job, things worked out.

nope, depends on which state you are. 78 weeks is common,44 here (red state). of course its not TOO hard to figure the ones that get the most....

Something close happened to me once.

When I had my own body shop, the guys at the local Maaco shop kept bugging me to go to work for them. So, when I made the decision to close my shop I talked to the manager at Maaco and made a deal with him. He was real enthused, said they were expanding into major body work, I could work into estimating, etc.

I told him it would take me a couple of weeks to get things wrapped up in my shop and I'd call him to set a date when I'd start work with them.

Ten days later, I called to set a date and got a recording that the phone was disconnected. Drove past the place and confirmed it. The windows were covered with newpaper on the inside, etc. The place had shut down.

Had a decent outcome, though. When I had my shop, the local Ford dealer had me do all of their in-house body work, and they were looking for a salesman. I went to work for Ford as a salesman and a couple of weeks later became Service Manager through no effort on my part.

Happened to my younger brother once. Went to work, place was locked up. Note on door said to go to the UE office. Then they found out that the owner hadn't been paying withholding taxes or Blue Cross insurance. Made for a tough year for him.

Called a vet med supplier last year around early December, and ordered some vet supplies. Shipped as usual, UPS, and arrived in three days. Called them again just before Christmas, and couldn't get an answer. Just figuring they closed early for Christmas, I called again just after the holiday. Operator answered the phone, and said they had been bought out by some big drug firm on the 20th. She was just there straightening out some books. The entire crew was told on the 21st they no longer had a job, here was their final pay with a bonus, thank you for your life. Nice Christmas present....

I got called into the conf. room two weeks to the day before Christmas one year and told my dept. and job had been eliminated.
Gee thanks, took me about four months to get the job but I went to work for the competion.

The old place did not make or ask me to sign a no-compete agreement. I told the new company everything they wanted to know.
