Need a new Battery

The dump truck barfed out the battery finally the other day. Looking for a group 78, 700cca or so.
My local choices are Napa, Autozone, Walmart, TSC and the local independent AutoValue.

Online they are all around $100. I dont plan on keeping the dump truck forever but dont want a battery that dies in a year or two either.

What batteries have you had good luck with.

Thanks,
Rick

Lately I've had much better luck with Walmart batteries than with NAPA batteries.

NAPA,Exide,Interstate,John Deere,WalmartI think they are all the same, probably even made in the same factory....Steve

I have had good luck with NAPA batteries for what that is worth. Have had one in a Massey 35 for about 9 or 10 years now and it is still doing well.

I started a couple of years ago putting Interstate batteries in about everything that needs a new battery. I have not been dissapointed.

Check there is only about 3 companies making auto batteries, Johnson Controls (Interstate, Walmart batteries and at various times in the past or present AC Delco, Motorcraft, Sears Diehard and Optima to name a few) Exide and I'm not sure of who else. Read the fine print you'll probably find most are made by Johnson Controls, but the service and warranty is all the retailer so who do you get the best service from?

I buy very little at AutoZone, but batteries are one of the things I do buy there.
I don't have another place that offers an 8 year warranty on a battery.
That's only on their "Gold" line of course. They're not cheap, but less than Optima.
I can't really tell you how well they back the warranty though, I've never taken one back.

I always use Walmart's batteries. I have one of their group 78 battery's. It has the 3 year free replacement warranty. I have them in two cars, standby generator and my garden tractor. Some are 10 years old. They don't quibble over the warranty at least where I live. Hal

(quoted from post at 03:26:01 11/08/12) we been using deka batteries not to bad good cranking last good made in pa dont corred either
East Penn has a factory in Corydon, Iowa, where they make Deka batteries, too. Very good battery, I gotta say.

I replaced the original battery in my 1992 Dodge Dakota with an Autozone Duralast Gold battery and it lasted 11 yrs! I replaced that battery a couple of years ago with another Duralast Gold battery with good results and have started to use the same batteries as replacements in the farm tractors.

Been using NAPA foryears and have had no problems. Even my trolling motor batts are going 5-6 years with poor care.

One son worked part time a Wal Mart while in college.....told me the Wal Mart workers called the Wally World batts "Never Start".

Had a big NAPA battery in a tractor that didn't get run for about 4 years (ran a branch through the radiator, didn't get around to fixing it for awhile). When I had it just about put back together, figured I'd better charge the battery. Put charger on, it was blinking almost immediately- which I thought meant battery wasn't taking a charge. Nope, it was because the battery was still fully charged- after sitting for 4 years!

I'm sold. . .

take your pick there are only 3 or 4 battery companies in the world these companies make the batteries for everybody, what you want is a medium grade battery not the 2 year, but something like a 5 or 7 year rated one, these seem to give the best bang for the buck, without spending a fortune on a super battery for a occasional use vehicle, also you can get more life out of the battery if you put a battery maintainer on it when the truck isnt gong to be used, these little jobs keep the battery fully charged at all times but don't overcharge it, you hook it up and forget it

DONT BUY FROM MENARDS......I just bought two Exides in a row that were BOTH BAD right out of the store grrrrrrrrrrr. They, of course, did give me a refund

Having farmed and been in the trucking and used truck n tractor business i.e. bought a TON of batteries, Ive had good luck with

Interstate Battery
NAPA
Sams

But I bought two Exides at Menards lately BOTH of which were bad right out of the stote

Im sure some here have had good and bad luck with any given so and so brand, lots of "Opinions" about batteries here, you might wanna do some hard core actual research before making a decision, there are only so many manufacturers out there regardless what labels they stick on the outside lol

I've got an Interstate battery near me - haven't tried them yet.

Not that I don't respect Johns opinion on it - but would like to hear others opinions on them as well.

Going to be needing a few myself very soon.

I dont think I ever got a bad one from Interstate PLUS they are a REAL battery store NOT a big box store battery AISLE and they can test and install and service and troubleshoot unlike some pimpled Nerd at Wally World lol

I buy all mine from Sam's Club. No tax, farm use. They will stand behind it with no problems. I have had several replaced under the warenttee. Normally they are the best price.

(quoted from post at 05:32:29 11/08/12) Sam's Club has better batteries than Walmart and better prices than almost anyone, they also have a
100% 3 year replacement and 7 year guarantee.

Why are Sams Club batterys better than Walmart batterys? Cost may be a bit lower but thats all. The big trouble with batterys is (1) haveing been mishandled during shiping and(2)exceeding shelf life because of no charger on them while on the shelf.

I bought one from Costco it lasted one year with a three year no fee trade in.
I have had my best luck with Batteries Plus have them in my wheel chair and the last very good for something that is very hard on batteries.
Wally world are just plain worthless.

maybe only a couple companies that make batteries but, like motor oil, they're NOT all made the same. The internals of the batteries are likely made to the spec of the label going on it. If autoz wants a super cheap battery they'll but in less substantial parts that may not hold up to vibration as well and fail, if napa wants a super duty battery they'll put in thicker plates, connectors ect.

Have had good luck with the BIG napa truck/tractor batteries (11 years that sits alot) and the older (10 years ago) plain napa batteries Bought a couple AC Delcos since a couple cars may not outlive the batteries. Have been good so far (1 year). Haven't bought many lately as the Factory Chrysler batteries have gone 9-10 years.
One used car had a sam's club in it and it died at 1-1/2 years, no reciept, no warranty..

Interstate. I know it was a lawn mower, but MIL had a rider with an Interstate battery that was put in it in 2004 or 2005 and she gave us the mower in 2007 when she moved to town. You know how short the life on a lawn mower battery usually is, but that one is STILL starting the mower. Have an Interstate in another car that is still going strong and I think it is 8-10 years old. Car gets stored for winter and have yet to have to jump/charge battery each spring and it gets started monthly during winter.

I've found Interstate batteries not to take rough
riding and jarring like on a tractor very well.Never has one that lasted very well on the other hand I have a set from Advance Auto in my Oliver 1650 that has been in it 8+ years and they still crank it just fine.

Application and type of use will make or break any battery. The more discharge/ charge cycles, deep discharges, heat, vibration, over charging or over charging . The shorter thee battery life.

Napa Legend 75, age one and a half years , passed away this afternoon. Survivors include one disgruntled owner, a loyal battery charger, and many other friends. Services will be friday, nov 9 at the local Napa store.

Here's the Walmart battery in my garden tractor.
I replaced it after 10 years with another Walmart battery. I kept the old battery. It's the type used on GM cars that have the connections on the side. I also changed the battery cables. I tried the full size with the posts on top and and it burnt the paint off the hood and had to repaint it. Hal

So far good luck with the 2 in my Dodge diesel. They were fresh according to the date on them-like only a month old. Excide warranty will cover them and Menards is good at returns-around here anyway.

Exide in my truck lasted 8.5 years.Gave up with a frozen cell.Hydrometer said that cell was tired.

I just put new batteries in my truck. Has a pair of group 24 in it. When I pulled the no-name and wally's-mart batteries out, the wally's-mart was a half inch shorter than the other three.
