Moldboard Plows Coulter Settings

With the election over, its now time to plow under the trash LOL !

Well I was actually wondering how most set their coulters, depth and space between it and the leading edge of the plow for optimum performance in stubble. No corn or other similar trash, just my garden and as much of a small field left in fallow that I have mowed.

I recently rebuilt my 101 Ford plow and have 'er hooked up greased and adjusted level in the furrow, but was unsure of what the ideal coulter settings would be, it looks like the previous owner did not have them set correctly, one is deeper.

Set them about 3/4" to 1" to the land side of the furrow slice.

No deeper than necessary to cut whatever trash/growth you are plowing in. Contrary to intuition, a coulter makes a plow pull harder - the coulter tends to lift the plow, and the force to move it through the ground is greater than the force to break the earth just ahead of the frog.

I'll check the spacing and adjust the depth once in a furrow, probably the best way once you can see how its plowing. My single bottom's coulter was set about like that and properly adjusted it pulled easily in sod and stubble.

Nice, funny I just about have every manual or book for every piece of equipment I own, but not for the 101, will have to source one of those, thanks for posting that !

If the coulter can be moved forward and aft, set it as far forward as you can in heavy trash. It gives a bit more clearance for the trash to clear the plow beam and shin.
