Battery charger, on a forney welder?

I was given an old forney buzz box, that my neighbor bought at an auction, many yr's ago, and never fixed up and used. It didn't have the two welding cables to plug into the various ports, and he never bought them. I bought the 3/8" tapered plugs at Pacific welding, and put them on some cables that I had. I have used it on some scrap metal, and it seems to strike an arc easier, and more stable, than my old linclon unit. I havent made any battery charging cables yet, but am wondering, if it is worth doing? I really dont understand how to set the amps of charge, and the voltage. all the decals aren't ledgible, and are hard to read. don't know where to come up with a manual for it. Would the battery charger feature, be worth the effort to obtain a manual, and cables? The post by Jake Collie reminded me of this, and thought I would see if any of you guys were familiure with the old Forney's.

Your welder puts out AC and you dont charge batterys with AC volts. Got to have a DC out-put for charging batterys.

I have one of those old forneys and have never used the charger either. I have used the 120 outlet for drills and such. I will look at the decals and see what I can read.

Gene! Two of the plug holes say's Battery charger! I suspect that somewhere inside the body of the unit, there must be a device for changing AC to Dc.Don't know what it would be called, because my knowledge of electricity, is how to plug, and unplug stuff, and once a month pay the elect bill.

All you need in the welder to convert AC to DC is a Whetstone bridge rectifier. Very simple little four element rectifier that puts out a ripple DC voltage, reduced to 12 volts. Probably built into the welder.

I bought a Forney welder way back in 1963 yea we did have electricity back then.
Mine is a comercial model will weld up to 250 amps but does not have the battery charger or 110 outlet. I do have the carbon arc torch and it works great for heating things up. Even as old as mine is it still welds great.
Here is a manual for $5.00 check it out.

Heres the front of mine if it will help. Jim

I have one like the one in the pic I have the battery cables for it as well as a book some where in the shop it also has a cutting tool that uses a carbon rod to cut with cnt

There is a seperate battery chager unit that plugs into those ports. I only knew one person that had it and wasn't impressed.
The welder itself is a reliable old unit!
