need an engine for my 950 again, would a 8v-92 detroit work. should be better than a 903 cummins

You will need to change the governor to "single weight variable speed" for best results in a tractor ( if the engine came out of a truck it will be a dual weight limiting speed, not the best suited for various throttle settings in a tractor). The governor will have a tag stamped 'S.W.V.S.'or 'D.W.L.S.' Some off-road vehicles like scrapers had the dual weight governor, but they were intended to be run wide-open all the time. Install the engine and change the governor later, if necessary. I recommend two large oval shaped mufflers. That way you can enjoy the sound of the engine. With the engine sitting on the floor, now would be a good time to pull the blower and put gaskets under it.

Not sure why you'd want a screaming jimmy but I wouldn't consider an 8V-92 silver as the silver series blew up with some regularity. As I understand it, they upped the HP but didn't up the bottom end of the engine to compensate for the increased power. What's wrong with 903? They were popular in a lot of 4 wheel drive tractors.

What's wrong with the 903? Nothing if it is not wore out, but they are long obsolete and parts are getting harder to find and they are very expensive to rebuild.

The 8V-92 doesn't have the torque rise of the 903 - you may find its lugging ability somewhat disappointing. And of course there will be the NOISE(!)

Can a Cummins 855 (straight six) can be made to fit in your 950? Whole engines and parts are readily available and cheap. Power ratings range from 260 to 475+ HP. And the 855 has good torque rise characteristics.

Put a big cam 855 in there. I see V8 Versatiles for sale in Alberta Canada that have been repowered with them. Or find yourself an 875, 895, 976 etc.

Our 875 has great torque char. and is excellent on fuel... unlike the old v8 powered 935(fuel pig!!)

I have seen a 900 repowered with an 8V Detriot engine, it fit and worked pretty well.

The old Cummins 855 would be a better engine, but is hard to fit, as the old Versy engine bay was designed for V6 or V8 engines, an inline 6 Cummins big block does not fit without extending the frame and hood.
I repowered an old Versitile 125 with a DD 6-71 inline and went the extended frame and hood route. That served as a good tractor for many years. Had one been avalible cheap though, a 6V or 8V Detriot would have been a better fit.

i was thinking 2 6 inch straight pipes, then all the neighbors can enjoy the sound of the engine.

If I were your neighbor, I would casually remind you that I have the ability to shatter that engine block from 400 yards, maybe a muffler or 4 would be a good idea.
