hey guys im trying to get started farming and looking at buying a small combine. i got a very good deal on a very nice corn planter but it has 34 inch rows. i am looking at buying an IH 715,815,. gleaner m2,l2. i am starting out at 50 acres but wanting to get much bigger. Can i get a 34 inch head for any? which combine would give me most bang for my buck? What kind of price am i looking at for these at an auction in ohio with both heads? Thanks for the replies im only 16 but trying to get the equipment around to start farming again.

also, when i do decide to buy one of these combines is it possible to load it onto a heavy goosneck trailer behind a 1 ton truck? Is it legal?

Kyle, first off tell us what make and model of corn planter because I have never heard of a planter that could only be set for 34" rows. Most any planter should be able to be set for 30" rows and that would be your popular size corn head. The 30" heads will usually take from 28" to 32" rows but if you get to wide then a head for 30" rows the inner rows will work OK but not the outer rows as you will be to far off of them. Same with a 40" or wide row head, they are usually set at 38" to center of snapping rols so they will work on 36" to 40" rows and up to a 4 row head you should get by with rows other than exactly the same as the head but getting to 6 or 8 row heads you could have a problem. Netter to figure out the planter and then start looking for the combine. 50 miles southwest of Findlay.

Ask a lot of the veteran farmers about who would be the best farm dealer in the area where you want to farm. Decide on your brands and brand models after that.

the planter is an old ih 455 but is in real good condition. when i tried measuring the spread on it i measured from the center of 2 discs to the next

Yes Kyle,You can haul it.The 95 was hauled from Kansas(700+miles.The 105 was only hauled 70 miles.

im an IH fan so lets say either a 715, 815 or 915 i was just keeping my options open .Did i measure my 455 right? if it is 34 inches can i cut it down to 30? it also has a bean spliter behind it

Consider how you will move the grain from the combine. A grain truck will cost about as much as a good used combine, A combine without a truck is useless. Almost went that way!

I have a truck and so does my dad I have a gravity wagon and the neighbors have alot of them I can borrow. All my friends have trucks and would help me out

Kyle don't let color blind you. Find the best machine you can for the money. I made the mistake of buying for color once upon a time, would have saved me a lot of time and money to have bought a good machine instead. I am not familiar with a 455 ih planter, but if its plate type be careful, modern seed isn't graded like it once was, it can be harder to match plates these days.

You need to find an operators manual for it and in there it will tell you how to adjust for different row spacings and if it has a row splitter it is not an old planter so definatly should be able to set it on 30" rows.

Readjust that planter to 30" rows asap and you will never regret it! My guess somebody wanted a 17" row bean planter so they made a dedicated bean planter. 30" corn rows and 15" bean rows would be a better row option unless you want to own 2 planters. Armand

I would definitely get color blind when It comes to a planter. John Deere 7000-6-30" rows or a Kinze 6-30" rows. finger pickup on both. You need no-till Coulters. keeton seed firmers. Trash whippers would be good also. A good crop needs to start out as good as it can. All the seed needs to come up on the same day. These planters will do as good a job as a new JD. Don't worry about the combine yet. I'll bet you have a neighbor who will trade you combining for a little help. Sometimes just helping him move fields is a big help. Opinions are like belly-buttons, everyone has one! Vic

Kyle; If I were you, I would seriously reconsider buying your own combine. Given your limited acreage and, I assume, limited budget your available funds would likely pay better if put towards a better planter, sprayer and or tractor. Timeliness is extremely important in planting and weed/pest control whereas there is a wider window for harvesting corn and soybeans. Your neighbor and friends with all the wagons and trucks likely have a combine (or use a reliable custom operator) and you could likely arrange to have your acreage done. Even if the custom operator charges $ 40/A times 50 acres, that is only $2,000. Any old combine is going to cost you a lot in repairs plus fuel and time. While it is nice to be completely independant it is costly. Just something for you to consider. BTDT!!

The rows on a 455 planter are adjustable. All you do is loosen the U-bolt and slide the row unit.

Your only problem will be interference with the transport wheels. At 32" the wheels are VERY close to the outside units on a 4-row planter. We had to run special square seed boxes on the outside units, as round ones would not clear the wheels. Also, rocks getting kicked up and smashing the boxes was an issue.

I second the suggestion to either hire a neighbor or a custom harvester to do the combining. Combine is the Swahili word for "money pit," especially when you're talking about a machine with ~2000 hours on it.

didn't they have trouble with the IH 8/915's ?

Our neighbor bought one 20 years ago but found out it had bent straw walkers and he never used it.. sold engine and scrapped it.

I NEVER EVER see anyone using them anywhere. Maybe see a 715 in a shed but not in use.

Like others said I'd consider custom combining the 1st year and see how it goes.

i'd look at a MF, Gleaner F thru L# or Deere 4400. lots of them around for parts. not too high $. Shoot, even some of the early rotory IHs aren't too high now days.

Good luck.

I love combines i love to drive them through my sunflower fields and harvest my weed with a big green cummins combine and i like to eat corn.. I like to combine at night time.. FARMERS UNITE!
