Baled Hay Yesterday

Baled hay in s.w.Pa Saturday. Well, cheated a little. I square baled two round bales. Baled about 10 rounds of too-short grass hay in the heart of the late June drought here; used sisal twine. Now the twine is gone on the bottom and these rounds want to scatter! Sat them near square baler and pitch-forked them into the pickup of the baler. 54 squares, some scatter waste, two sore shoulders. Two rounds worth $70; 54 squares $162. That's about $90 an hour. Would have been a tougher job if long hay.

I tried to bale corn stalks yesterday. Took a bearing out on the baler just after the time that the dealer closed. I had bearings here for that shaft size, but the outside race was wrong. The auto parts store didn't have it. Went to a good sized ag supply store, private owned, they didn't have it. Stopped back at the Mennonite repair shop. The guy was gone to help somebody else but his wife told me to help myself if I knew what I needed. Didn't have the mic with me and the only one I found that I thought was right wasn't in a box,but it was on the shelf between the next size bigger and the next smaller,so I figured that was it. Nope. Gonna have to go back in the morning and if he doesn't have the right one,I'll have to head on over to the dealer.
I'm running out of fall weather I'm afraid. Gotta get this stuff done soon or forget it,and that ain't gonna be purdy for the feed situation.

We wanted to bale some more grass hay, but just ran out of drying days, put the baler away for the winter today.

I was lucky to get a 6 day drying time, cut on Tues, rolled them yesterday (21 5x5). Alfalfa/grass mix. Could have used one more day but rain coming in big today. The guy that I cut them for convinced me to give it a try as I was done for the year, I thought. Glad it worked out for him. Had to rake 3 times to get it to dry properly.

Was a beautiful fall day with temps in the 60's and blue sky. Baler ran the best it has ever run, not a single burp or clog... Tractor was working harder, think it was the winterized diesel. Did not seem to have the power it usually has. Have heard that the winter fuel is a bit less on the cetane rating.
