I just drove by the brand new TSC store in GrandJunction today. Are they as good as I hear about. Is it worth a 50 mile trip?

I guess it depends what you have to compare it to. We have Orschelns and TSC nearby and I prefer Orschelns, but sometimes I can find a bargain in TSC.

i'm not real impressed with them except they have big bags of cat food and the fact theyre open saturday afternoon and sunday...local feed houses beat their prices easy...they got a good selection of farm and ranch stuff, but again, theyre proud of it.

Wander through the next time you're up there, but don't make a special trip.
Mine here carries a few inferior quality parts for the Ford N series, but not
even a set of spark plug wires for a 6 cylinder.
They have baby chicks and bunnies and kittens and dog food, but only one
1/2" 90 degree swivel hydraulic fitting in stock, and no bearings for my disk.
Prices here are higher than the local auto parts store.

YMMV

We dont have anything to compare. No 'farm stores' at all.just a few places that have a few parts/supplys.

DeltaRed,

If there aren't any farm stores within 50 miles, it might be worth while driving to the TSC. There headquarters is in Nashville. They have TSC stores all around here. I probably visit one of their stores three or four times a year to buy some stuff.

Their real draw for me is the fact that they sell their Chinese hardware (nuts, bolts, washers, etc.) by the pound not by the piece. If you can live with soft hardware, it's a pretty good deal.

I buy cheap hytran there, also I like the little LED flashlights for $1.99. Also have bought fencing supplies there and a barrel stove kit that were good prices. Prices on tubes and tires are insanely high compared to NAPA and local tire shops. Bolts and nuts by the pound are handy sometimes. Not worth a special trip in my view, but a handy alternative if you're looking to compare prices.

Years ago when they were actually "Tractor Supply Co" ,they were good. A few years ago they got rid of all their "farm iron". No points, moldbords, chisels. Only empty pegs where hyd fittings should be. Now, just enough of anything to pizz you off! Not even enough clothes for the city folk. I, personally refuse to shop there. Did try them for some casters last summer. The same exact ones in HD were 50% less.

The one around here still carries some actual farm parts, but that's probably to compete with the local farm & home stores that do so as well. My advice is, if they have the item you want THERE, you're good to go. But ordering anything special through them? Dear lord, don't even mess with that. Maybe it's just the one around here, but they are the most incompetent people ever when it comes to special ordering me parts.

they used to be a good store when they had to compete with quality farm and fleet. they bought out farm and fleet, now they are not as good as once was.

Delta Red, Yes they are not the store they were 20 yrs ago, But their Bulk Bolt and Screw isle is WELL worth the drive. Jeans and Shirts better prices than most other store! and feed you may need, Fence supplies, and tools,Hardware items, welding supplies Grinding Discs too. Please don't listen to the Sour grapes comments. Once you start going by while you are in town you will use it all the time!
Here in Central Texas they have made themselves indispensable to the weekend Farmer/Rancher, but there many, many items you will use and need on a regular basis Hope this helps!
Later,
John A.

Not as good as they once were. At one time, they were in competition with Central Tractor, but they went out of business. TSC sometimes has farm items, but they are getting farther and fewer between. I did get my Roundup from them last year at $25 a jug less than the local supply store. We still get our dog food there because it's cheaper than the local stores and you still get a fifty pound bag. And their bolts are by the pound, and about 1/4 of the price at the local hardware store. So to answer your question, yes and no. You have to look and shop anymore for just about anything.

You can go online and see what they have and get pricing also. I have never had any problem with their bolts and quite often buy a bag of this and that to have around. got a good deal on a 7Hp IR compressor there.

A lot depends on the store manager/owner, and how many outlets they have. Our local TSC, the guy has 3 stores maybe 30 mile apart. They stock things for both weekend and real farmers. Good hardware, and seasonal suplies, for both urban and country folk. Bruce

Probably not, if you are looking for tractor parts. They opened one in Greeley this summer and advertised on the radio that they were not selling tractor parts. I don't ever plan on going in it. I would imagine it is just another chinese junk store.

What "onefarmer" said below.

Manager of our TSC told me that the "T" part of each store depends on location. If the store is located in a rural/agricultural area, it's more likely to be "T" and agriculturally oriented. If it's located near a yuppie-type population, then lesser amounts of "T." Ours, unfortunately, is of the latter type.

For example: I stopped at our local TSC this summer to pick up an oil filter for a John Deere A. A John Deere A is the "Ford, Chevy, Dodge" commonality of tractors. Also, the filter for the A is used on other JD models too. Couldn't find one on the shelf, talked to the manager and she just shrugged her shoulders.

During the summer, work took me up into the Finger Lakes area of NY State and for those of you who have never been there, aside from being a special piece of God's creation, it is also a prime agricultural area. So I stopped in at a NAPA store, told the guy what I wanted, he punched it up on the computer and said, "How many do you want? I've got five on the shelf."

Anyway--just sayin'....

But Zachy-at issue here is the fact that one can't compare prices if TSC doesn't have what you are looking for.

Here in SE Michigan they're pretty much the only game in town. There are very few farm stores here that are comparable to stores in Colorado. The quality of their products varies from good to mediocre, and their prices are reasonable. Despite the name, they're not a great place to buy tractor parts, but their selection of other farm supplies is decent.

I like TSC, but mostly just because we don't have anything else like it in our area. So, when compared to having nothing - it's great.

It's all typical big malls and walmarts around here.

We have a few small feed stores that try - but their prices tend to be high and selection low.

So if something better comes along, then I'll re-evaluate.

But for me it's the ONLY place I can go for things like feed lot panels - inexpensive sandblasting sand, electric fence parts, livestock medicines, syringes, antibiotics, etc. or even the occasional farmall t-shirt.

Of course there's also all the stuff I CAN get elsewhere, but their prices are competitive - livestock feed, pet food, oil, bearings, etc. etc.

For tractor stuff - well, they're good in a pinch sometimes. For common generic items.

Staff is always very friendly, and about as helpful as you can expect, which is to say they can help look things up in a catalog, but they're not going to know what they're looking up IS. (obviously differs with each person)

And my kids can always find some silly little thing for me for christmas - a farmall mug or whatever.

And if you don't mind shopping at the end of a season they have some pretty amazing sales on clothing. Winter clothing will be marked down sometimes 1/4 of the original price just to move it out - including some namebrand stuff like carhartt.

So... would I drive 50 miles to one?...

Only if there was nothing better in a 49 mile radius.

not worth a special trip. If your passing by stop in and browse. Then you will get a idea what is there.
DO NOT special order anything, there software system to place and track orders stinks.
sign up for the emailed circular as they from time to time sell hydro oil cheap. Probably no cheaper then Chinamart.
Staff is friendly but for the most part not that knowledgeable like your local Ace store.
Pete

AH the famous TOYS , SHOES , and Candy Stores , lots of China junk . If ya need plow shears they might have them but if ya need the bolts to hold them on don't count on it , if they have the bolts they don't have the shears . If ya need a tractor light bulb say a 4411 they don't have it but they will have a whole light if you are in dire need of a complete light when ya go in they have the bulb but not the light . If your looking for work shirts they will have a rack full of 2x to 4 x but not one large . BUT THEY have everything for horse's

If your looking for clothing and junk then yes. If your looking for supplies for your tractor no. They should change their name.

Not even close to what Fleet Farm has or can get. Google Mills Fleet Farm, I don't know for sure but you may be able to order and have stuff shipped to your door. Me I just drive there. Jim

don't expect much and you won't be dispointed at leased that is the way it is down here i have three stores within 20 mile radius of me

Several years ago I used to buy quite a bit of my oil and fence supplies there, these days about the only thing I buy there are gloves and pliers. TSC has switched there focus to the urban cowboy, more clothes, home decor and horsey supplies. FYI they sell parts for hay equip, sections, guards....stay away from them there cheap for a reason.

If you have a WalMart and a hardware store closer,go to them. Same stuff and nothing more.

Yep. About 35 years ago, I bought an overhaul kit for an International H from them. The tractor still runs good today. About the only thing they sell for it now is some overpriced motor oil. I actually did buy a pressure washer from them a few months ago, but only because it was on sale.

Don't expect warranty from them. 160.00 dollar pair of boots. Fell apart in five months. They told me no warranty because I couldn't prove where I bought them. Had the TSC name boot in a TSC box that said made for TSC.

In my area they have the best price on fencing, posts, twine,Blue Jeans, cattle panels, hydraulic oil, bolts, traps, rat poison, hydraulic lines and fittings. They don't have 'everything' but what store ever does? Plus they're open when all the so
called farm stores are closed on weekends and evenings.

When Quality Farm Fleet went under and TSC bought them the Quality mangers came on board and that was the major downturn of TSC being a farm store anymore. When Quality bought Central Tractor, that was the end of them too.

Like it has been said - depends on where you are. We also have Orschelns here, which is almost a clone. TSC usually has tons of stuff for farms - "real" and "horsey". Go there and check them out for yourself.

it depends on what else you have in your area, here, there good as gold, in the next town [ 10 miles] which is a tourist trap they mainly have 2 things, way overpriced real estate, and tourist trinkets made in china , if your a working man, the stuff you need is sparse indeed, tsc has put a store in the towns about 50, and 70 miles away from here and its great to be able to drive there and actually buy farm and ranch stuff all in one place, without driving all over the town or having to actually order it in on the little brown truck to get it

Like many a good retail outlet for specialty items, they seem to be falling by the wayside on what actually got them to where they WERE.
It seems that the decisons are based soley on accounting practices and volume movement. Many a company owner gets sucked in to these practices because it appears to make top and bottom lines grow. Well, it does for a while.
But they are losing the solid base of loyal customers because few people in the stores that I have visited could spot a tractor in an open field. They do not have a clue what parts fit what. There is little if any selction or choice for things that can really be of use.
They recently removed a very good paint line from the shelves and replaced it with junk. Once again, it is an accounting decision, not a good customer retention decison.
I will still drop by, but the last big ticket item I bought was a $500 air compressor that was on deep discount due to having a scrape in the tank paint.
I pick up a few nuts and bolts to save the drive to the hardware store, but they will not survive on what little I now purchase.

They don't have avaible what I need to even be able to order it. Found out the furthest away one of the 6 in my area is the one most likely to have something for the farm and that one is several miles out in the country, not in town like all the others.

Only place I have ever heard of a Orschelns is on this site, is it a local place? None in this area of Ohio or Indiana.

Hay equipment parts are what I have been looking at and if by chance they do have a rake tooth, and not all stores even have a bin for them, I can go elseware and buy them for less than half the price TSC askes for them. One rake tooth that I needed they did not carry at all, Rual king had it at over $6 per toth while I can go elseware and buy that same tooth for less than $3, mower knife sections the same way. Haven't needed to buy tillage parts but when I walk through the store if I can even find a tillage section it has nothing in it. Might be needing some disk blades if a deal works out and the only place I have found them is at Agri-Supply so I may have to contact them to find out a shipping cost. Will want a 18", 11 gage blade with 1" sq. center hole. Shoup does not list them and something that could be put on but not correct is over twice the price plus the shipping as well.

Use a lot of bolts and price at competor is less and actually usually have more sizes. Common size for me is a 3/8" X 1" cap screw and TSC does not carry it. Also anything in a 7/16" that was common on the older machinery.

2 new ones just opened in the last year and as for well stocked when new, just the opposite.

All over a hundred mile away, closer to 125 mile. Nothing in northeast corner of state.

The first Tractor Supply store started here in 1939. The original building is still being used but not by TSC. Like is said when they were Tractor Supply they were a good store. You could buy the complete kit for any tractor motor and they lasted for a long time. Our store is more of a "horsey" one. too. They still have quite a bit of farm stuff though.

Well, since you never been to one, got to go atleast once. See what you like and don't like. I'll say like these guys, few consumable- tune up - tractor parts, but pto stuff, mower stuff= you are in irrigation area, they got stuff I don't have a clue how to plumb it. Nuts bolts, OILS! Sometimes the best deal on name brand or hydraulics around here. Basic dog and horsey stuff, and I get boots and clothes when the sales are on. Just don't/can't expect to get a camshaft ordered out of a parts yard in Iowa like they did 20 years ago. But you got to go.

But--they aren't quality parts. I know--been fooled by TSC and their Ford parts too many times. What's the useful life of a TSC coil for a Ford N vs the same coil from NAPA? Not even close.

Here in ohio they have the highest prices around.
Mostly selling to horse people and some city slickers that want a bag of chicken feed.

Went to a TSC and wanted to get a refill on a 40 CF Oxygen bottle.

"We only sell new filled bottles"
"How much are they?"
"$180."
"No refills or exchanges?"
"Nope"

Went to another welding supply and exchanged it for $15.

I have to agree with most below , depends on how desperate you are and what your defination of quallity is. China flee market basically.

A fifty mile trip? Probably not worth it. Personally, I like TSC. When I was buying cat food for my Mom's cat, I found that it was $2.00 cheaper at TSC than at the grocery. When I was buying t-posts I found that they were cheaper than the co-op. And one time looking for a 10 inch chain saw chain ( I know that's small, but I like a battery powered saw for pruning from a ladder) I found that Rural King was $5 cheaper than Orscheln, and that TSC was another dollar cheaper than Rural King.

They are but a shadow of what they used to be years and years ago. (50 or so) Back then you could buy tractor parts, overhaul engine kits etc.

3 years ago I bought some plow bolts at TSC, went back this summer to get more, none in the store. They had snowplow cutting edge plow bolts though.

I don"t know why they call TSC Store. Thats if the TSC stands for Tractor Supply Center???
Every time I go in to there store and need to buy paint for tractors there usally out.

If you need live stock or animal produces more than half the store stock up on that. Getting hard to find tractor parts and tractor supplys at ant of the one's near me anymore anyways.

This part of the country they are NOT price competive and really don,t stock a lot of farm items. Seem to cater to the high end horse folks. Most real farmers in thes parts just laugh at them..

I have discovered that TSC is the rare place that has work belts in my size. My belt is easy to spot hanging on the rack---it's the one with six inches of the holey end lying flat on the floor.

Best to go look for your self.I dont know of any store that has every thing I need.Stores tend to stock things they can sell.No horses here now so I dont need horse stuff.I have bought a drill press, floor crane,2 small air compressors.A 6 ton electric wood splitter, steel fence posts..Only place where you can buy a 4x6 power hack saw here. They have some grade 5 and 8 hardware.I buy oil dry there for less than Sams club. Many posters on here will put down any store you can name.Going to a store is not a social event,I go in to buy what I need at a reasonable price.I dont make fun of young clerks who have just started on the job.I figure they are lucky to have a job in this messed up economy.

I stop by TSC in Fargo/Moorhead ever so often. Buy a few things now and then. Got my sprayer tank I needed as a replacement this spring. But being 90 miles from home not worth going unless I'm in Fargo for something else, most of the time VA appts.
